"Today is a great night?"

Congrats Boston. I couldn't believe it when that ugly dude with the big jaw hit that grand slam. WOW!

The New Yorkers in the stands just pulled their hats over their eyes.

I bet Steinbrenner (sp?) went nuts!

Must you rub it in, Jef?

Seriously, it's about time for Boston to get them a championship.

I am a die hard Yankee fan since the early 70's. Even though I had a bitter pill to swallow last night every cloud has a silver lining. My Father who is 83 years old has rooted for the Red Sox since the 1930's (he is from New Hampshire) and I have seen him suffer so many Red Sox melt downs and can say without any hesitation, I hope the Red Sox win this World Series! I am sure I will be the only Yankee fan rooting for them but I just want my poor Dad to see the Red Sox win it just this once.

I hope Babe and Mickey and Lou and Joe D forgive me!

Naaah. Down here in the South, it's customary to pull for the team that beat yours out. I mean, what better way to save face than to have lost to the champs?

Me 2, I love the Yankees but now I am rooting for the Red Sox to go all the way. After Boston's years of suffering, they deserve a World Series win.

Very sad about the innocent bystander that got killed by the pepper spray cannister. They are talking about banning liquor sales in boston during the games and not showing it on live tv there. Isn't there a way that the police could be better prepared to prevent this?

Not a pepper spray cannister as you are thinking, Batman. These are sort similar to the "non-lethal" beanbags they fire for crowd control. The beanbags just sting like a b!tch. These are supposed to sting like a b!itch and break open and douse you with pepper spray, adding insult to injury. However, as with ANY of the non-lethal projectiles used by law enforcement, getting struck in the head (or as in this case, the eye) can be quite lethal.

As to being better prepared... look at the result of some of the past NCAA basketball championship games. Folks riot whether they win or lose. To paraphrase Douglas Adams, preparing for people to act foolish usually greatly underestimates the extent of the people's foolishness. If you're turning over cars and starting fires, you ought to be ready for a sharp blow to the head. I hate this girl got killed, probably a case of wrong place at wrong time. But if she was in the middle of all of that.... you pay your dollar, you take your chances.

I think some people look for any excuse to roit/celebrate like that. I think even if Boston would have lost things would have been the same. It's tragic that someone was killed but I dont think it was the police's fault, people should be more civilized than that. I dont follow baseball, but i really got into it these last 5 or 6 games, I hope Boston takes the Series.

Several follow-ups I've seen: The weapon used is similar to a paint-ball gun, and the projectile similar to the paint-balls - only filled with pepper-spray. Several "witnesses" have said, to paraphrase, they thought the cop over-reacted, and that it wasn't so bad they needed to start firing on the crowd.

I say: the police have one job to do before anything else - finish their shift unharmed and get home. If they felt they needed to get everyone's attention, I say that they were in a better position to judge that than I. It's terrible the girl was killed, but hindsight is always 20/20.

Strongly agree.

Well, Boston is a giant college town with about half a million students (about 60 colleges and universities). Even if a small percentage of these get rowdy, the police can barely deal with them. I was in the city that day - and the police was EVERYWHERE, basically trying to prevent vandalism and rowdiness. There is no way you can control large aggressive crowds without somebody getting hurt. In fact, it is sort of a miracle that only one person died. When the Patriots won the Super Bowl, about 4 people got killed (if I remember well), and lots of cars were vandalized and burned.
