If you'd let that Gonzo Imperial Porter warm up a bit, you'd be amazed how much different it tastes.

For the record...Yuengling Brewery makes a kick ass tasty budget conscious everyday porter. Very nice beer for little coin.

I'll have to give that a shot... I'm not opposed to trying it!

Yeah...a porter doesn't really strut it's stuff at forty degrees or below.

If you like stout's and you're after that Imperial one you mentioned..try something a little more accessible....

Like:

Old Rasputin Russian Imperial

&

Bell's Kalamazoo Stout

I swear you won't be disappointed.

I'm surprised that no one has popped up with the answer:

My Five Favorite Beers:

1) The one I just finished
2) The one I'm drinking now
3 - 5) The ones in the cooler that I'll be drinking in a few minutes

For those of you with a local Costco store - they are now selling a 24-pack of craft brews for $18. You get 6 each of 4 different varieties which actually are brews by our local Gordon Biersch...

I want to try some Samuel Adams beer, but have never had. What are some really good choices. Oh, and to give you an idea -- I tend to like the taste of yellow beers, i.e. Corona and Stella. I do love a good Guiness tho, but I think that's the only "stiff" beer I have come to drink.

The definitive starting point for Samuel Adams is of course Samuel Adams Lager.

From there..the sky is the limit. They make flavors and styles to suit everyone.

Some of my favs.

Oktoberfest
Boston Ale
Scotch Ale
Cream Stout
Honey Porter
Old Fezziwig
Black Lager

I don't think they do a great job with their Wit's or "white" beers, nor the whole lineup of Wheat beers. But that's my tastes. Some people rave over their Cherry Wheat..me it's one of their better wheats, but tastes like a cough drop. Not a bad thing. Upside is...chicks dig it. Blackberry Wit is another "chicks dig it" beer. It fall's in line with Chicster's and my motto..."Don't fruit the beer."

To clear up some misconceptions that people have about stouts i.e. Guinness. Most people assume that a true stout, because it is dark, is thick as motor oil and hence is as strong as a sledge hammer. Which is untrue. True to style Dry Irish stouts (Guinness) are dark, have no more calories (125/12 oz I believe) than a regular ale, and are generally weaker than most beers. True stouts should only be in the 4% abv range. Which means.....ultimately.....it's a poundable, all day beer. I always overhear a lot of people mistakenly think they're gonna get slammed putting away pints of Guinness. Yes...it's slightly stronger than the Bud/Lite, Coors, Corona, Michelob, etc..stuff their normally used to drinking, but far less than any respectable American Pale Ale, India Pale Ale, Dunkelweizen, etc...that is just starting to come over the horizon in mainstream bars.

People get confused easily about stouts being syrup like and thick for a couple of reasons. One being word of mouth. Overhearing others say a stout is thick and strong keeps the belief perpetuated, and also, because stouts branch off into different realms, and with the current Micro revolution style envelopes are being pushed to the limit. There are many iterations of stouts that do get thicker, sweeter, and stronger. Ask me, I'll be glad to tell!

However, for heaven's sake! Since Guinness is the most commercially available stout at the time. Don't buy into the hype that a Guinness has to be served only on Nitro or "Beer Gas". Especially, in the cans or bottle six packs with that foul little "Nitro Widget" The key to finding that packaging faux pas is the package will say, "Draught" on it. Buy Guinness Extra Stout in the bottles or the 250 Anniversary brew in bottles (Extra Stout or Anniversary will not have the word "Draught" anywhere on the packaging.). I guarantee, you'll like those, carbed up naturally with CO2, the way nature intended, far more than you will those nasty other things. My last Irish Stout I brewed, I kept to style of 1.5-2.0 volume units of CO2. Which produces a thin ring of rich brown foam at the top of the glass. It's a good brew, but next time, I'll keep it carbed to my standard of 2.5 units. Which gives me a thick inch and a half of foam. A little heavy on the gas, but it produces the same result if I pour out a Guinness Extra Stout into a glass. The gas itself is an extra ingredient in any beer...kinda like the twelfth man on a football team. The carbonic acid really finishes up, and adds something to a brew.

In addendum:

Beer Gas or "Nitro" that you see at bars only on "Guinness" taps....regardless of the cock and bull story your fed, here's the skinny. Nitro is used to push beer far distances. CO2 can be used for the same deal however, to achieve the same results, you have to use far more CO2 to do the same job, which for long lines (as in most commercial joints), will overcarbonate a beer far more than an we are used to, and also, push a stout out of the recommended carbing unit range for it's style. Hence the nitro mix or "Beer Gas" as it's called. The downfall of this, is most line techs set it at a universal amount to push all taps. Not just the Guinness tap. So more often than not, you and I are not getting "the perfectly poured" Guinness. Try one after a Guinness tech has futzed with the regulators and cleaned the tap, and you'll find heaven.
