Default Time To Head For Higher Ground

We were able to make reservations at a camp ground in Tyler Texas, so we are going to try to get out of here by 1:00PM tomorrow. Spent the day securing everything around here today, I sure hope I didn't miss anything. I don't expect I'll sleep much tonight or the next couple of nights.

That's right, someone is going to get it no matter what. The camper is just about packed, we've got the guns, photo's and documents.

Looking at my weather info this morning....sheeet! It is a coin toss.
The warmer water of the gulf and the area around the La an MIS delta are going to suck that Cane right up the alley.
I don't even see any wind sheer to help. Sorry but you guys are sitting ducks.
It looks likes Texas is a safe place west of the Sabine area. Your still going to have some heavy rain. If that high pressure creates gust or wind sheer it may steer it up to the Ms area.
If it stays its course and merges to the west. The east side of that Cane is going to slap the La area really hard. Similar to what Ivan did to the Pensacola area.

That's why I wanted to be inland a good distance. Tyler is not that far from Dallas, we may just go set up in Don's driveway and run our sewer hose out to the street like in "Christmas Vacation".

I was reading were one of the big-time hurricane experts was pretty worried because Gustav was heading right down the throat of the Loop Current. If you don't know what the Loop Current is, google it and you'll understand why the worry is justified.

Part of the Gulf Stream, the Loop Current is a warm ocean current in the Gulf of Mexico that flows northward between Cuba and the Yucatán peninsula, moves north into the Gulf of Mexico, loops west and south before exiting to the east through the Florida Straits.

A related feature is an area of warm water called an "Eddy" or "Loop Current ring" that separates from the Loop Current, somewhat randomly. These rings then drift to the west at speeds of about 5 cm/s (0.18 km/h or 0.11 mph) and bump into the coast of Texas or

yep this is what might make it a really hectic. If this thing gets in that then it may visit several states and not hit land fall. I can't think of any state on the gulf coast right now that needs anymore water.

I'm shutting down the computer now, hopefully I'll be back posting by Thursday or Friday in a undamaged home. To all you other members on the gulf coast, we're all going to meet at Don's Sunday, he'll have beer and BBQ. Someone please notify Don and let him know.

Oh crap, it looks like GUSTAV is going right over Bell City.

Hurricane Tracker - - MSNBC.com

Right now it looks like the winds are in the mid 70s and weakening. I really hope they're correct, keeping my fingers crossed. To put this in perspective a 70 mph wind has 4 times the force as a 35 mph wind. A 140 mph wind has the 16 times the force as 35 mph. If the storm loses another 10 mph or so before landfall it would be a big help.

I hope Andre and his family are safe and dry.

[Edit] As of 10:30 pm winds are down to 60 mph.

Thank you for the prayers they sure worked. We just arrived and unpacked the camper about a hour ago. We had zero damage here although my camper was slightly bruised when Don was chasing us down the street with a baseball bat. ( Note to self, don't show up at Don's announced.) I haven't talked to CajunCountry (Ernie) yet, but his home was on the wrong side of the storm and he probably won't be allowed back in yet, as soon as I know you'll know.

Geez a little gust of wind and you run to Texas, empty handed!!! Except that gatortooth back scratcher. Next time you show up at my house without Gumbo it'll be a shotgun and not a bat.
