Default Demagnetizing Tires

Maybe someone here can point me in the right direction.

I received an offer from my local (car) dealership to "demagnetize" my car's tires. They *claim* that it will save me fuel or something.

I assume that this is one of those "let's take money from the gullible" scams, but one of my cow-orkers just asked me about it.

I tried google, but didn't come up with any useful information - what's the opinion of the staff of experts here?

RUN.....direction isn't important!

Is there any kind of consumer protection agency there?

Oh, and find a different dealer. These guys are either extremely stupid or crooks.......or both.

Have you changed from "Winter Air" to "Summer Air" in your tires yet?

Demagnetizing won't do any good unless you rotate the air as well.

Oh, yes! I took out the "autumn breeze" and replaced it with "summer fresh" back in April.

Question: Does a compass point to your tires when held nearby?

If not, I wouldn't worry about it. Sounds like a scam. Did they offer to fill them with nitrogen also?

Yes, nitrogen is offered as an option, but I don't buy that either.

I would rather have my tires filled with helium - it would make the car lighter, and therefore faster!

My boss swears he can tell the difference. I've gone into the whole "this is why race cars use it, but you'll never see the advantages" speech, but he won't listen. Maybe he's scheduled for a tire rotation and de-magnetizing this week. It wouldn't surprise me.

My suggestion:
-Do some in-depth research into the physics of magnetization.
-Call the service technician with a NASA-level question concerning some sort of sub-atomic particle.
-When he doesn't understand the question, inform him that he's insulting your intelligence by addressing the macros of the issue while completely ignoring ignoring the micros.

OR

-Duct-tape a magnet inside one of your rims.
-Have them perform the service.
-Produce the magnet.
-As you stick it to something iron, inform them that they'll "be hearing from your lawyers."

OR

-Put a magnet in your underwear.
-Approach the service tech.
-As you stick a box wrench to your nuts, ask them if the demagnetizer's available for a quick test-drive.

That's just TOO MUCH for a Monday before the second cup of coffee!!!

Thanks Meatman. I needed that.

Tell your boss that I've got some beachfront property for sale in Nebraska. I've also got a place at the base of the ski lifts in Holland. If he's looking for a great deal on some fantastic real estate, he should contact me asap!

Now, now . . . don't poke fun . . . he says his tires run cooler and thus, save him gas because he's not dissipating all that heat.

Also you might think about changing the air in your tires.
After many miles the dry air carries moisture and this creates excessive rotating mass. Not so much with aluminum wheels but really bad with steel wheels.
The fresh air along with demagnitizing will insure that the TOM-TOM is working accuratley.

Not even funny (to him). He absolutely despises liquids of any kind in his tires. That's another reason he likes the nitrogen . . . no water vapor to mess up his commute.

Say you're pulling up to a stop sign with all that water (both condensed and uncondensed) in your tires. Could be trouble.

I'd definitely report him to the police at least for fraud. Not to sound bad, but there are a lot of gullible people out there that could be taken advantage of.

The main reason I don't run nitrogen in my tires:

Say your car catches fire while you're on the freeway. You're running 60 mph . . . on fire. Now say you have an active bee hive in the backseat, next to your great-great-grandmother, who although she's not particularly scared of the bees, is allergic to beestings. Now, say she's holding the handle on a pin-less hand grenade and you were on your way to the local army base to get some assistance in, you know, NOT getting blown to bits. Now say your great-great-grandma's got hte shakes and can't hold the grenade handle, manage the bees and fight the fire all at once and she winds up dropping the damned thing. You, in your present mindset, are NOT prepared to deal with a live hand grenade in the car and you make the conscious decision to leave the old bag in the car with the grenade and take a dive . . . except you were driving near the ocean and you wind up in the drink just as your car explodes.

If, in the off chance that one of the car's bumpers were to become ensnared around your neck, thus dragging you to the bottom of the ocean, just as a couple of your car tires came plunging in with you . . . you'd only have the contents of those tires to keep you alive until someone summoned help.

Now I ask you: Which would you rather have in your tires? Good old air, which you can breathe, or some &&&&ty nitrogen?

THAT'S why I don't put nitrogen in my tires. A similar argument can be made for not demagnetizing your tires.

That's a great point! I'd have never thought of that, and I often travel with bees and grandmothers.

You really can't be too safe.
