Default Being diplomatic with an old guy (or, does this sound right to you?)

So my father in law bought an enclosed trailer a year or two ago to move from alaska to new york. As soon as he got to new york he started talking about how he didn't have a use for it and was going to sell it. A few months went by and my wife and I borrowed the trailer to move in with them and he offered to sell it to us for $1100 (slightly more than the cost of renting a uhaul for our next move from new york to WA state) so we could just keep it around for future moves. Anyway, here we are 9 months later and we are moving next month. I haven't paid him in full for the trailer yet but I was planning on it in the next week or two. I have paid him part of it but now he starts talking like he doesn't want to sell it because he thinks he can use it to tow his quads around (two of them (they won't fit but no one dares tell him that but me)) so he how hums around and says maybe he'll buy an open double quad trailer "if" we buy his.

So last night I got online and used the rest of the money I owed him (after clearing it with my mother in law) and bought a 4 year old trailer exactly as he described. I'm picking up that trailer tomorrow after work and towing it back so hopefully he won't have anything to complain about (I can dream right?). All that being said does it sound like the right thing to do or should I have just given him the cash and left him to his devices?
