Seems like break-in takes forever, keeping the motor below 4 grand is hard to do.

Only if you believe the "don't take it above 4K in the first 1000 miles" doctrine. There are other philosophies which say that you should take the engine up to temperature, then ride it through all power bands, then cool it down again. Repeat until you've hit the 1,000 mile mark.

The manual says below 4K under 500 miles, then 6K to 1000 miles. I have 270 miles on it now, and have done just that, run it up to 12K for 10-15 seconds, then back down to below 4K several times. When I first got it, I brought it up to temp, then let it cool down several times. I am a believer in that process. Problem now is the weather is good, and I want to get out on the highway and run it up for a long distance on a trip, but am afraid to leave it at a high rpm for a long time until I get some more miles on it.

I did more than 270 miles on Saturday. What's wrong with you, boy?

Take the bike out, let it get up to temperature, then take it through it's paces. Find yourself a nice stretch of road (not superslab, but some motorcycle-friendly roads with twists and turns!) and ride that bike! You'll be at 1K miles in no time at all!
