It's gonna be hard to get Americans to go small. We have too many toys, and need a big truck/SUV to haul them around.

Big motorhome toy box to haul the kiddos to the MX races in.
25' boat to go fishing.
40' race trailer w/ living quarters.
35' enclosed trailer to take the show car to the shows in.
24' trailer to haul the ATV's up to the riding park.
30' horse trailer to go to the rodeo's

Nope, smart cars won't go over big here, neither will tiny pick-ups. Big dually 4x4 diesel trucks rule (at least in TX ) But maybe not for long.

My "little" Audi A3 quattro, with a 2.0 liter turbodiesel engine can haul up to 3500 lbs - I've pulled a trailer with two horses without any problem at all.

I drove to Zürich and back tonight (about 120 miles roundtrip) and averaged 38 mpg.

I have a 2007 Ford F150...140 liter fuel tank!

I filled up yesterday after poking Sgt Mike (guess i'm not laughing anymore), it was 177 bucks, meaning I had 12 liters left in the tank. At the current price of fuel, i have roughly a 200 dollar tank...thank god the mileage is decent for a full size truck.

Add to that, the problem that i need this mondo machine for work. Where i live, an A3 wouldn't get me from point A to point B...point A and a half maybe....

My truck is a hauler only. I use it maybe once a month. Two years ago I bought a hyundai elantra. Great mileage, 32 city and I have gotten up to 44 hwy but average 38. I was at a stop light yesterday and a hummer did pull up next to me. I gave him the and he shook his head. $40K vehicle that probably cannot be sold to anyone with a brain.

Gasoline is not the only fuel that has skyrocketed. I burn wood for heat but I always check my nat. gas bill. April of last year the temp avg. was 2 deg warmer than April 08'. I used 1.7 therms/day at a cost of $1.89/day. April 08' I used .8 therms/day and the cost was $2.23/day. Lots of folks are gonna be hurtin' next winter if this keeps up. Thank God I don't use propane!!

I travel about 60 MPH all the time in my car. The majority of people pass me going at least 75 MPH. We're talking all kinds of vehicles. Americans need to slow down! I don't know about everywhere else. And yes, the commuters where I'm at will go all the way into DC which takes about an hour to an hour and a half one way. We turned all the railroads into bike paths a while back. BIG mistake. Public transportation is very minimal. I work from home during the day and have a second part-time job at night that I commute to, 26 miles round trip so, I'm feeling pretty fortunate right now even though I drive a diesel pickup (which I don't think I could get my money out of it these days if I wanted to trade it in or sell it.) The wife drives a Passat that gets 29-31 MPG...I think I'll take it for commuting.

Dude, regardless of whether or not it can do it, it's not designed (i.e. geared) to do it. That's why they make trucks. I would recommend against doing that on a regular basis.

And I give your thumbs up a thumbs up! Only $40k? Musta been a H3 posermobile.

I agree with Landry. That's just not a good idea. Inadequate brakes, undercooled transmission... it's a recipe for either disaster or premature mechanical failure.

$40K was just a guess. I have never really priced them. More than I thought I suppose. My F150 gets terrible mpg but it is paid for and I can get it dirty and not worry about expensive repairs.
