I've got an idea ... how about stupidity-powered vehicles? That would mean that some of us would have to slow down a bit, but it would also mean that we wouldn't have to deal with traffic, since the majority of the population would be zipping right along ...

In regards for the argument of "your neighbor to the north" and our oil reserves? I live near the oil...i pay more than you..there's a refinery down the street...i pay more than you....i LIVE where the gas IS! And guess what....I pay more than you....

So I'm going on a driving vacation to California this summer...know why? You pay less than me!

Current Price in Europe:

Switzerland - 1 US Gallon Regular - $7.44
Germany - 1 US Gallon Regular - $9.00

So, you're paying $3.76 per gallon! LOL! Just what are you complaining about?

That's propably in part due to the cradle to grave entitlements that you receive.

Interesting. Please elaborate.

As far as the oil companies building more refineries just to help ease the price: horse%%%%. When has a company ever invested massive amounts of capital in order to drive down profits? Never.

$7 a gallon gas next summer? I doubt it. I wouldn't be surprised, but I doubt it.

That would turn teh current system on it's ear overnight. Suddenly, that bum on the corner with the brown paper bag would become a small refinery for fuel. He'd smoke himself to death in a matter of hours.

I can see it now . . . Rosie O'Donnell's cornered the market on high-powered racing fuel and Ben Stein's riding the bus.

At least I could ride for free!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hmm, I didn't quite get that one either.. If you are referring to the welfare state, well I like to think that is covered in the £1,000+ ($2.000+) a month I pay in income tax, or the additional 65p in every pound in my pocket in stealth taxes, and that is before I spend that pound at the fuel pump!

And as a wee sideways rant... after 27 years active service, I was unemployed for a month, and during that month I was entitled to £0.00 from that same welfare system that give thousands a month to those who have come as "Assylum seekers" or those that have never turned out for a days work. To be told I am ineligible for unemployment benefit was a real blade in the spine I can tell you. Just another reason we are leaving this country (Should be spelt without the 'o')

LOL!!!

Living and working in Europe is no different than living and working in the USA, except that we have a bit better protection from large corporations.

There are no "entitlements" here. We work, we pay taxes. Politicians abuse their powers and squander money.

The only difference is that through the strong unions, there are better workers rights. For example, large companies can't just go laying off hundreds or thousands of people and still pay the CEO millions. It happens, but not very often. The worker's rights laws ensure that layoffs are justified and that care is taken to help these people find a new job.

Other than that, employees are required to carry health insurance, so everyone is covered. In Germany, the costs are split between the company and the employee, while in Switzerland, I pay the $300 per month insurance myself. (My company pays for my accident/workers compensation insurance). This means that hospitals spend more time trying to cure you, and less time worrying if and how they are going to get paid.

I would imagine that life in Canada is not much different than life in the UK, actually. Except that there are less Americans illegally crossing the border into the UK...

Nothing is free, they're paying for everything that they get from their government.

You're correct, companies don't invest money to drive down profits, they invest to become more efficient. Efficiency = reduction in costs. Reduction in costs = larger profits.

I didn't mean that entitlements are free, you dearly pay for them most of it propably unfairly. I'm saying that the high cost of fuel in Europe is mostly taxes. Am I incorrect on that point?
