i remember reading about that... well no worries of flooding here. When i was signing for the house i bought they had to ask whether it was on a flood plain. I'm basically on top of a hill. If water starts to rise up to my garage i have bigger issues than my car going under water.. such as the entire city of rochester being under like 100 feet of water.

It's funny, when I bought my condo, I didn't even ask about a flood plain.

Remarkable in that Jackson swamp (named after the town it abuts) is right out the back door. Okay, 1/2 mile away.

Why didn't it bother me?

In laws lived in town for a century. The water drains to the swamp. the 700 + acre swamp which can absorb a lot of water.

My house is exactly 5 feet above sea level, global warming is like the Sword of Damocles hanging over my home.

with an analogy of that status, I salute you.

Damocles indeed. Many of us live with that sword, few are truly aware.

To which I reply "Who was Diogenes looking for?"

I knew this one from the encyclopedia. When they were still relevant.

Heck, taught me how to spell encyclopedia, didn't it?

I am always amazed at the local hype (in Memphis) regarding West Nile Virus (dun, dun, DUUUNNNNN!!!). They go to all this effort to educate the public about leaving an ounce of water in an old coke can for fear of breeding mosquitoes with West Nile Virus (dun, dun, DUUUNNNNN!!!), then I go to the homeland [removes hat and looks SSE with a tear in his eye] and my PaPaw's house is located a hundred yards from 100,000 gallons of perfectly stagnant water. It makes me think that the locals (in Memphis) are either looney or just plain dumb.

You aren't going to find anyone who'll argue with you about THAT.

It's just confirming the stereotype.

Probably a lot more predators around PaPaw's house...

Oh yeah. Pretty much everything we have here (as far as snakes and spiders go) PLUS gators. On the bright side, you're never wanting for something to shoot!

West Nile is a real problem. I don't think it's a very serious problem, though. There were, I think, 9 reported cases last summer here in Tucson. An epidemic, I tell ya.

That's sad, dude. They move, like, 1 foot per second . . . they are not a threat . . . I'd bet you don't eat them . . . and they are kinda' cute.

Shoot something else.

Now, I'll shoot a rabbit. They may be cute, but they're edible (as hell). Stew 'em up with some onions and celery . . . man, that's tasty!

I guess my favorite wild game to eat is squirrel. My MaMaw can make them taste so freaking good it makes my mouth water to think about it. She does something with them that results in a gravy. Fantastic. Tastes so good you don't mind shooting (and cleaning, yuck) something that cute.
