Default Landing a C-130 on a Carrier?

I told a guy in class last week that I was pretty sure that they had operated a C-130 from a carrier before. He told me I was wrong. I was pretty sure I was right, but he was a pilot, so . . .

Anyway. I thought it made for an interesting read. I'm sure others will find it about as interesting as watching paint dry.

That is interesting. That pilot had one good set of gonads to attempt some thing like that.

Into a 40 kt wind on a deck that's moving at, what, 30 kts? That would mean a zero rollout distance for a Cessna 152. Heck, you'd be going backward! It probably cuts the "ground" speed of the C-130 by a third or more.

I think the net air speed was 40 knots - probably 20+ knots of speed from the carrier (the Forrestal was not nuclear powered so top speed isn't as fast as the Nimitz-class carriers) and maybe 20 knots or so of head wind. Still an impressive feat...

The C130 is known for its short field capabilities - adding JATO bottles makes for an amazingly short takeoff run! Back in my younger days when I was a paratrooper it was my second favorite jump, after chopper blasts from a Huey!

Impressive! Damm good pilot! 15' clearance from the tower!!! Geeeez....and I consider parallel parking in an F-250 a challenge.

Pilot, heck. Anyone standing in that tower had to be a bit mad.

The C-130 is one of my top 5 favorite aircraft. (A10, F-15, B52, SR71 are the others) The gunship version is quite a sight.

Hey I was on that ship. Not at that time but I was on that ship.

The C-130 has definitely earned its place as the do all aircraft. One heck of a workhorse.

Wow, I was one of the guys that said it had never been done. I'm glad to be corrected though, that was some amazing flying. And the gunship version is the AC-130H Spectre, and AC-130U Spooky.

I've been to EAA and seen one of kind aircraft, but ain't never seen anything like this.

For the record, they landed a u-2 on an aircraft carrier a couple of times, too.

The later models (larger wingspan) were impossible, but right around '63, I'd say they tried the same thing.
