Default a real dilema

the registration renewal for the bike came the other day.

As the old scoot is over 20 years old, I could get "collector" plates instead of the standard plates on the Yamaha now.

But I really don't see it as "collectible."

btw, does anybody know where I can get a set of mufflers for a 1980 Yamaha xs850? Mine are pretty rotten.

Is there any differance on collectors plates vs standard plates for bikes, what are the advantages if any?
I know on cars you dont have to get the historical cars E-checked, but I think thats it

No dilemma. The bike is now a collectible so you have to get a new bike. Riding a classic every day is not practicle. So as you see I have solved your dilemma. Asking how I solved the muffler question... I didn't but since you will have another bike you can take your time searching for the muffler.

vince, it's a good answer, but now I need to provide more info.

1) I believe the bike season is too short to spend much for a fancy bike - hence the purchase of said Yamaha for $900. So far, that turned out 40,000 miles and still going.

2) I have another bike that needs some work. A 1984 Honda Magna vf700C. I always meant to work on it and get it going after having some engine trouble. Maybe this year.

3) lastly, the price difference is small. $23 for 2 years registration (maybe because we're the home of harley davidson) vs $73 for a collector's plate.

but I still like your answer. Someday I will be driving a bike not made in the 80's, but the strategy has been working so far.

thanks, I book marked it and will keep it in mind.

although I have heard mixed reviews about the 3 into 1 pipe.

Somehow, I get the feeling that from NY to WI, the shipping might come close the price of the pipe.

The biggest issue I see is its an older bike so the guy may take advantage of you. On newer model bikes there are places shipping free so it shouldn't be too much if he doesn't try to take you for a ride. No pun intended.

it's something I should have ordered a couple of years ago, but then I didn't think the old scoot was going to make it this far.

AHA!!

I have the brother sitting in my shed, a 1982 Magna V45

See..

poor wee soul is in desperate need of some TLC, sadly time is something I just don't have enough of at the moment, It'll be at least a year before I can turn a hand to it, that's why I ended up buying a brand new one, much less TLC.

buster, you won't believe this, but mine's the same color!

except they had square headlights in '84. Something I never did like about it.

and the 6 speed transmission, in city driving, it seems like you're always shifting.

I dunno if mine had a square one, I have seen them and I also, am not that keen.

I did have it stripped to get the frame powder couted, however, the guy doing it for me got sent south, so he had to throw it back together before I could get any cleaning and polishing done.

One day though.... one day.
