There are several severe lapses in your reasoning, Mike, but I'll just mention this one: I have no intention of letting the fate of my children rest with the public school system. I'm insulted that you'd think I would. Have you read anything I've written with your mind open?

No, I take that back. I'll mention two: There were no malls when you were a kid. There were no places of large-scale collection for fat, lazy kids. If that's your evidence for arguing that all (or even most) kids are fat and lazy today, it doesn't hold water. There were just as many back then, but they weren't parading around in a single public place. Your really need to think harder about the big picture.

Yes, I agree with you - kids don't have to work as hard as they did. But neither did kids of your generation when compared to the one before, and so on. Is this a bad thing? Only if it results in negative behavior, which I happen to think is much less of an issue than you do, and I also think I can keep my kids from falling into that trap. Kids of every generation have participated in behavior that their parents disapproved of.

The sky is not falling.

I don't agree with Vin on a few things, but for the most part, that man has got his s*&t together.

Crap. I'm too late. Had a load of fun with the kids at the park, though.

I love Daylight Saving Time! Oops. that's another thread.

Good for you on that decision, both of my boys went to private schools and the discipline that they learn there is still with them and passing it on to their children.

No, I take that back. I'll mention two: There were no malls when you were a kid. There were no places of large-scale collection for fat, lazy kids. You're correct, no malls but good size shopping centers where kids my age congregated, and no there were not as many fat kids then as there are now because we didn't access to all the junk food that is available now, nor did we have the money to buy what was available and we also had to walk and ride bicycles to where we went, today they ride almost everywhere.

I didn't have to work as hard as my father did but he taught me and my nine brothers great work ethics because we had to help him build houses during summer vacations. I did work hard and I knew the value of a dollar because none was given to me, I had to earn it. A lot of todays kids do not respect authority, laws, law enforcement officers and the elderly as much as we did.
I believe that you will keep your children from falling in that trap and kudos to you and your wife for doing it. Unfortunately a lot of parents don't have your your discipline to do it. I was involved in youth athletics and the number of parents that uses those programs as baby sitting sevices is more than can be imagined, many time I had to wait for parents to pick up their child after a baseball game or a swim meet or take their child to their home because they forgot to pick them up. It wasn't like that when I was growing up. I'm not condemning all but there's too many of them doing it.

The sky is not falling.

Fair enough. I don't think we're that far apart on the subject. I should clarify that I may well have my kids in the public school system at times, but I intend to be active in the district and work toward the ideals I'd like to see in this country. That, in conjunction with strong support at home, should overcome any deficiencies otherwise present.

probably all of them are urban legend, but they have all have a great moral to their story.

I'd really like to hear what you think they are. To me, they're just wisecracks indicating that the French are cowards, wimps, or selfish. You may well think that is true, or that it was 60 years ago, but I fail to see any significant "morals" in them.

Red, I don't believe their actual quotes, but I agree with the sentiment of them. It sounds like you're taking me out of context also on the word "moral". In the context I stated, "moral of the story", is used as in the meaning of the story. Not morals as I should not steal, covet another's wife, etc.........
And as far as the French being portrayed as cowards(that opinion already existed), etc....That's not what I got out of it. What I got out of it is the lack of appreciation for the great things this country, and it's military have accomplished in defense and aid of other nations, and yet most world doesn't want to mention that. That is, until they need us to bail them out of some military or natural disaster situation.

Well, if they are indeed fabricated, then this just spreads that false notion that "most [of the] world doesn't want to mention that. That is, until they need us to bail them out of some military or natural disaster situation. " To the contrary, most folks are tremendously grateful for what we've done, but that's no reason not to criticize our mistakes and errors of diplomatic judgment. What, they're just supposed to shut up and take whatever we do? That's not a reasonable expectation.

Also, the two definitions of morals you mentioned are the same thing.
