Default If you could open/start your own business

So if you had the money and resources to start/open your own business what would it be and where would you locate it??

A friend of mine and I have always wanted to open something akin to a bed and breakfast but have it done to a Renaissance theme.
The whole place would look like a castle of medieval times, the food would be of that time period or as close to it as we could get. Of course we'd have all the moder amenities for toiletries but everything would have that Knights of the Round table feel to it.

We also wanted to have a lot of land to where we could host competitions such as long bow shoots and of the like. I don't think we'd do the whole jousting thing but who knows.. we might or at least perform it for them.

All the workers would be dressed in the attire of the culture of that day. I think it would really cool place to hang out.

Location would be up in the Tenn mountains or there abouts.

I love to work on cars. I've always wanted to own a car+motorcycle repair shop, with a huge warehouse in the back so that whenever business is slow or when the shop closes, all the employees can have go kart races. And then on the weekends I'd make the go kart racing available to the public if they were willing to sign a waiver and pay.

I've always wanted to start a Non-Profit Org. that caters to the plight of the Nauga.

The Nauga is just slaughtered senselessly for its hide. Nothing else is used. The Nauga is slaughtered and the hides are sent to foreign tailors to make cut rate, flea market jackets. Bad copies of Italian furniture. And upholstery shops all throughout East L.A..

After decades of mindless slaughter....the Nauga....is nigh on extinction.

I'm a simple man. I got tired of thinking my senior year in college (no big surprise to any of you). So with that in mind, I would choose the following in this order:

1) Gutter Company: I have never been as happy at work as I was when I was hanging gutter. Aside from the 2 pack a day habit, it was great.

2) Gym: The thought of having other people buy my weights for me is blissful.

3) Restaurant: I could really dig having a restaurant.

4) Landscaping Company: Hard work, decent money, free tan.

Honestly Scotty,

There is an unbelievable amount of work involved in starting a small business. Especially if you want to enter the hotel and restaurant market. I own and operate a small business in commercial and industrial facilities maintenance building and repair, and believe me, that's easier than hotel and restaurant management ( done that too, decades ago ).

There are so many compliance issues from zoning, permits, taxes, employment, sales, insurance, etc, etc. I couldn't cover a tenth of the issues involved.

Even financing for a venture like that is hard to get. You need to have an incredibly detailed business plan to even walk into a bank. This alone can eat up tens of thousands in personal labor and consulting fees. And, not to burst your bubble, Hotel/restaurant ventures have the highest failure rate so, banks are reluctant to give decent loan rates or loan money to these ventures.

The best suggestion I can give is, if you or your friend haven't, take some classes in hotel and restaurant management. Quite a few issues are covered in these courses.

The only way I was able to go into business was to take every penny I owned after 15 years as a project manager and invest it all in equipment, tools, trucks, shop space, lawyers, accountants, insurance agents, employees, customers, sales, etc, etc, etc.

Oh, and time, if you start a business don't ever expect to have any personal time. If it's 3 o'clock in the morning, you better be doing some work, be it actual or paper. Don't even think of time with kids.

Heck, I could go on and on.

WoW! Thanks Paul.. I had no idea what was involved. I told my friend that we needed some research into this idea before going hog wild over it. A good idea alone isn't enough to get a loan to make it all happen. I figured it would be complicated. I think it may be just a fond idea to kick around instead of actually going through with it. but I think it would still be an awesome venture..

Well Scotty, what I like best about your idea is the Tennessee mountains location. But then how much work would I get done.

As for me, one of the coolest jobs I've seen was what Yellow Wolf did at Deals Gap taking videos of bikes riding through the Dragon. He did a pretty good job of keeping up with the sport bikes with his Goldwing. Of course I don't have now and will never have the skills he had to do that. They would be peeling me out of the trees on a day basis if I tried. Just a fantasy.

Here's a sample. He did have some trouble keeping up with this Ducati on the straights.

I've always wanted to be a Doctor, but a lot of women misconstrue this and just assume I want to see them naked.
