I believe part of the problem is that kids today do not have the fear/respect of severe consequences mostly because they believe they do not exist for them.

In my day stepping out of line had its consequences, sometimes immediate. It could come through peers, teachers, the neighbor, mom and dad. Structured parameters and boundaries were prevalent throughout society but beginning to crumble. I cannot recall any shootings in schools in the US during my adolescence. You had a problem it was solved with fists after school and stayed there. So some kid got his ass kicked, so what!! Much better than getting shot! Seems like today our schools want boys to get in touch with their feminine side. Sad!

Maybe this has been addressed but I did not feel like reading several pages of posting. Just my .02

I bet no one back then had even heard of school shootings or mass murder.. that would put an end to this discussion once and for all. Go look at crime trends and see if its risen any in the past 10 decades..
Umm would you care to ask the Blacks, Jewish, or Native Americans if they know anything about mass murder?

Just because no one talked about those things doesn't mean they didn't occur in great numbers, and the inverse is also true. Awareness brings prevention.

Here's a start. Why don't you work on eliminating your skewed assumptions before bringing this nonsense out again in such a derogatory and depressing fashion.

Bureau of Justice Statistics Violent Crime Rate Trends

Bureau of Justice Statistics Key Crime and Justice Facts at a Glance
Nice stats however they only go back to 1973 and I don't see where any of them relate the percentage of crimes to the growth of population. So your argument is based on stats that don't cover the time frame that bb is is speaking of.

Also while most crime including violent crime has gone down in that time frame we do not know what the stats were like before 1973. There are some other stats that should be brought out.
  • Drug arrests for adults has more then trippled.
  • Prision populations have more than quadruppled since 1980 (point bb)
  • However suicides are down in prision, this may explain the rise in the population. (-1/2 point bb)
All in all it was an interesting read. Evidently drug use don't cause crime to rise... now where are those Cheeh & Chong albums?

Rape, spousal abuse, child abuse and exploitation were common and over looked crimes through out history.

The temperance Movement and Prohibition actually came about as a result of those crimes. History is slowly but surely glossing over that fact.

Many forms of abuse were common and over looked in times past. How bad do you think child abuse needed to be before child protection and child labor laws were enacted?

How about the textile and industrial mills that provided dormitories on site to protect the women workers. They already paid them next to nothing. Do you think they provided housing and a secured neighborhood out of the goodness of their heart?

Nope.

I'm mute on this argument any longer. Making one look foolish kinda squashes my enthusiasm to debate. So I go back to making stupid pointless remarks about things.

I have decided to agree with anything anyone said in this post and if there are conflicting arguments or ideas I agree with those too.

"The US has the highest crime rate in the world and the most over crowded jails and crime rates are still soaring.."

If you got rid of the ridiculous " war on Drugs " crap, those statistics would change. Sending someone to prison for 10 years for selling a bag of pot is ridiculous.

If you think justice is blind in the U.S. your dreaming. Money, and thus lawyers run the courts. If you can afford a lawyer, you have a chance. Poor, with a court appointed lawyer...meet Bubba.

Wow, you had a gram of coke/crack on you? You go jail, looong time!!

Oh, your white (or have the money ) and have a lawyer ? Pay the fine and quit that!!

Last time I cared to look, it was something like 80% of prisoners were non violent drug offenders. Everyone knows that prison time will make those folk better citizens.

I know.. it riles me that though "pot" is illegal you can however get an herbal alternative thats just as bad as "pot" and gives you the same effect when smoked. The only reason this herbal alternative is legal is because the gov can tax it as cigs.

In my view this country is broken, and sold out to the rich.

So to your comments Palanon. You've stated one of many things wrong in our country.

However commit a serious crime in the US and you WILL pay, over here a man raped an 18 month old child (YES! you read it right), he got two years and will be out after 12 months, a girl was systematically abused for 5 years whilst her mother watched and joined in! she (mother) got 5 years, a young lad was caught drawing graffiti on a railway bridge - guess what - 6 years. One guy is caught after embezzling £30K - 25 years, most muderers go down for 25 and are out after 13 AFTER suing the Govt. for making them slop out!

You wanna see a %%%%ed up judicial system, look no further, honestly you couldn't make this stuff up!
