Actually, [inspiron dons his flame-protection gear]

I don't think that the problem is that simple. Sure, the parents have to give their kids a sense of right and wrong - the kids have to learn empathy, knowing that it is wrong to inflict pain on another human.

But there are other factors that have desensitized society which are also to blame: Peer pressure to participate in "slap parties" and other stupid activities made popular and possible through video-phones and the Internet; Films showing torture and massive violence (everything from Misery to John Rambo); the graphic nature of the evening news and pseudo-"reality" television shows which make violent criminals into TV stars; and even the widespread use of anti-depressant drugs which lower inhibitions while "elevating mood".

All of these things contribute to a higher frequency of violence in today's world.

I agree that video games and media in general has desensitized people. But are people supposed to completely abandon the ability to tell reality from make believe; right from wrong ,etc.

It's 100% due to up-bringing, where morals and values are to be taught. Yes kids can stray from it some due to peer pressure and whatever, but if the up-bringing was done half way correctly, the "foundation" should be enough to reel them back to reality before they do anything as horrible as this.

The drugs you mentioned above are another story but are somewhat related.

just my opinion..........

I agree with Jim. Threatening them with physical abuse is just compounding the problem.

There is no reason, IMO, ever to strike a child of any age. Get rid of the stupid violent video games and teach human relations in school.

I also think that the world isn't much worse today than it was 20-30 years ago. It is the sensational media that jumps on these stories a lot faster than they did in years past.

There is nothing to discuss, these humans are broken. Take them out back and strangle them, then bury them deep so their rotting corpse offend no one. So it is written, so let it be done.

Have a nice day.

I like how you think. That would be alot cheaper than taxpayer funded electricity. But do make it a public event.

Again, there are many roads that lead to Rome.

If you are brought up in a family where values are strong, you can be raised without physical punishment. But it is a lot of work for the parents to establish their position and maintain respect over the years. And I know from my girlfriend that children can drive their parents to the edge of sanity, and many of them respond by spanking in order to "regain" their position of authority.

Once the kids have gone so far as those in the original post, the parents can't do anything anymore. These kids are too far gone, and only society at large (in other words, the justice system) can deal with them.

But they won't, at least not enough to prevent it in the future.

At least that was my original point, I think....... Excuse me while I whip this out.
