That usually means that mist freezes along the sides and accumulates just like icicles on a roof. It's not like the whole water flow freezes, unless it was just a trickle to begin with.

Heh. You're down south, though. It's only zero here. I went downtown in five below yesterday to try out my new lens. Here's the best shot I came away with (it was pretty quiet in that weather).

Freezing rain is an example of water not freezing at 32. It only freezes in the presence of 'condensation nucleii', particles in the air which trigger the crystalization process. Water can be several degrees below freezing and still be liquid, which is exactly what freezing rain is. The instant it contacts a solid object, it crystalizes.

I learned something today!

A similar thing happens with superheated water. The water continues to absorb heat but due to a lack of nucleation points it has no physical starting point for the boiling process. Water heated in a nice new glass container in a microwave will do that. Remember the cute little chinese chick I posted a pic of a couple of weeks ago (standing by me with teh box full of flying squirrel)? That happened to her 2 or 3 years ago. Burned her forehead, but she's all healed now.

That would explain why my instant mashed potatos blew up as soon as it hit the hot water in the pirex glass that was heated in the microwave.
