You have a classic that would be very hard to replace. Anybody and their dog can go and get an 07. I'd do like Pete has said and do some improvements/modifications over time. Even if it doesn't get great gas mileage, you can buy a lot of gas for the amount of a car payment. Just my $0.02.

First thing I would do is invest in a new 4 V intake, a new 575 cfm holley street avenger carb. Open element air cleaner.
A new duraspark distributor.
Tri-y headers and free flowing mufflers.
This will get your mileage up maybe 7 to 9 miles per gallon...IF you keep your foot out of it.
Then I would get disc brakes!
Because Confucius say " man who make car go faster with no brake upgrade...hit brick wall faster"

If you need any ideas or Part numbers let me know.

I know some will call bullsh$t but I can build a economy engine.

Hitch a ride with friends or get a rich girlfriend that will drive you around

If I were you I would hold onto that car with a death grip! Gas mileage sucks on those but you can work around it. You say you can't own two cars... why not. No ones saying you can't by a cheaper daily driver car that gets great gas mileage and then drive the Stang on the weekends. There are a ton of cars out there for 3-4k that get at least 20mpg and insurance would be fairly cheap for both. I am a huge Mustang fan though, especially of the early years. When I was 17 I had a POS Nissan Sentra but it got about 21mpg and I got to drive my mom's '66 on the weekends Good luck with the decision.

I see where your coming from, and I'm with you on that, but the thing is that if I sold the stang my dad would..spot me the extra 2 or 3 grand to get a new one, but the last thing he wants is another car. (We have a 4 car garage and 6 cars )

In the long run you will feel better about keeping it. But if it's restored, base or not, you should be able to get enough to buy a newer stang outright. I personally wouldn't pay that much but there are plenty of people out there obsessed with the "golden age" automobiles.

I'd do handling first, then power. You've got a motorcycle for gas mileage.

The car is 40+ years old, it's time to get a new one I'd say.

For those that say its a 40 year old car..get rid of it...what ever. I have 43 year old car to be exact that will walk away from a 50k over priced Shelby.
Granted i could make the car achieve the 25 mpg if I wanted too! The technology today is there. It just takes money. The same money you pump into a new car payment. The after market supply for these cars is unbelievable. You want 4 wheel disc brakes and power assisted rack-n-pinion ..you got it!

The whole upgrade can be done cheap. Craigslist has list of parts that are selling for cheap. Buyer beware though.
Here is a little pic of mine.

I have a 69 SS Camaro that I have almost finished restoring. I would seriously look into selling your 65 Mustang as a classic.

But, I would NEVER buy a new car from a dealership. You get splayed wide and driven home.

Look for a used car.

See LCA. This is where Camaro fans and Mustangs differ.
The camaro produced two body styles. There stock values are higher because of the limited body styles and prduction. The mustang produced three body styles.
The first where the coupe and the convertible in 64 1/2.
Then the fastback came along in 1965. With the Shelby influence and the Eleanor craze this has taken the popular non-knowning individuals to idolize only the fastback. Thus driving the market thru the roof.
When in fact the coupe (with exception of the 65-66 GT-350's) was the dominating force in trans am from 64-68. At 66 the mustang sales approached the 1 million mark.
The pony car is admired by many and unfortunately it is sometimes more valuable to the owner than the buyer. This is my opinion after many decades of restoring mustang and camaros.
Some people look at the coupe as a basic car. His car might blue book at 15k. But no body out there would pay that. Modified with up to date equipment this makes the car a better seller. In a few years yes that value can be had.
This is my educated opinion having owned a 67 rs/ss, 68 350 and a 66 GT coupe, 68 fastback, 72 mustang, 66 I6 coupe, 65 Gt coupe, 66 v-8 coupe and Blistic. Plus two newer stangs 96 GT and the current 06 GT.
So here's the deal. Keep the mustang. Ride the tires off the bike. drive the car when it is cold.
Pete

Interesting... didn't know all that about Mustangs.

Also, I bought my 69 SS at 13 for $900.00 specifically because of the individuality and short-production run of the 1st Gen 69 Style Camaro.

$900. A very wise investment. 69 SS models are bringing a pretty penny.
