Well yet another mile stone has past. Last night I watched my baby girl walk across the stage and receive her High School diploma. Hannah is the younger of my two daughters and while I take great joy in her accomplishment it is also the end of an era. Watching her walk across the stage I realized that a young woman had replaced my little girl. I also wondered why this affected me more then when our oldest graduated. I guess there is something about the youngest child growing up that has finality to it. The time of child rearing comes to an end. While we will always be parents our roles change. When the youngest one steps out into adulthood we as parents are once again faced with the same unknowns we had when they were born. Except this time we have even less control over the outcome. My Little Girl Gone is the baby with eyes so full of expression Gone is the little girl I would swing around in the park Gone is she the “big girl” on her first day at school No longer is she a child afraid of the dark No longer does she need me to escort her safely bed No longer is there a need to tuck her in with a kiss goodnight Past are the tickles, and giggles and running back for more Past is the need to kiss her when and where it hurts Past is the time of “Minnie” her comfort and cheer Over are the days of teaching her to ride a bike Over is the time when she needs us there all thru the night Over the horizon a time in the future has come all too soon When her name was called for all to hear When she walked across the stage as so many had before When she accepted the symbol of what she had become Our dreams our desires and even our fears became fulfilled Our time of teaching her wrong from right Our encouraging her to choose the path of light Now our council is not so much needed thou often repeated Now she is the one who is stirring the nest Now she has spread her wings and has taken flight Soon the challenge of college will be over too Soon she will have home and family of her own Soon this time will come and again it will be too soon And before you ask Yes I wrote it. |
