Yesterday, I was given my intro crash course to the wood lathe. After showing basic safety, the different gouges and chisels and their usage, my teacher made me practice on a couple pieces of 2x2 from roughing a piece to making v-cuts, beads and coves. After the practice, we set up for the pen. Giving only a few pointer, Mike (the guy's name) let me do the whole work. Now this ain't a masterpiece. There are quite a few flaws but I know why and how to prevent them. There's 2 major marks from when the spindle gouge caught. I tried to diminish their appearance but I didn't do enough. I also was too gentle on the medium grit sanding so the lower grit marks are visible. It's made of Brazilian Rosewood. It's my 1st and I'm proud of it! |
