Default MiniDV camera - under $300

Looks like the Canon Elura 100 is high on the list in this price range. Any insight? I'm buying one for my father for Christmas. He's using his still camera to take horribly nauseating footage of his new grandchildren and many other, much more mundane topics.

Rowdy, at our age the bad still pictures are better than being forced to watch film of your family with their heads cut off.
My son is glad I don't have one after the last time I used his.
It would be better to give him something to play the disc's that you took.

I know, but like I said, he's doing it anyway. I was hoping an actual video camera with image stabilization might help. At least the heads'll stay in the frame.

But how well does that image stabilization work?

I've seen too many videos shot by amateur Fellinis and Spielburgs that, even with image stabilization, are so shaky, you'd think they were done during an earthquake. (Of course, I'm not one to talk - my hands are far from steady when trying to video tape something.)

As long as the video is for non-professional use, I don't have much problem with shaky videos. It's when people try to go the cheap route and not use steady-cams for professional type videos that I like to vomit in their laps. (there's some imagery for you! )

Well, there are optical and digital stabilization, but at this price range digital is the only option. Mostly I'm looking for an upgrade in picture quality. His Powershot takes low-quality video, and if he's going to continue to shoot the grandkids I'd like it to be better, shaky or not.
