One of my best friends is Assistant Service Manager at a VW dealership, and one of their techs moved to the states from Germany. This guy said that almost all work is done with
hand tools. I could hardly believe this, so I demanded an explanation.
According to the German guy (who they always tease about being a David Hasslehoff fan), "the shops in Europe supply the techs with the tools & toolbox needed so they don’t have to buy their own (like techs in the states do). The shop wont buy air tools because they cost so much over there. He said they are allowing impacts but the main reason is there are less muckups doing everything by hand. He also said they aren’t “banned” but use is extremely limited. All the technicians are salary paid over there as well."
I thought that was interesting enough to share. Seems like it would make dealer repairs a lot more expensive.
