Talking Rubber On My Pipe

I'm sure this has been covered time and again. Heck, I think I've commented on the topic once or twice myself. An advanced and detailed search isn't giving me any joy.
I've got some good sized boot marks on my Cobra slashcuts that for the life of me I can't remove. All my old tricks are not working, and now circular scratches are my reward.
Our local stealer gave a suggestion that he swears by that I'll relate (and am thinking of trying).
Use a PROPANE torch and wooden spoon. He claims the heat is not too hot to blue the pipes, and the residue will turn to ash.
Typically Mother's has done the trick for me.
Looking for other ideas that work with no further damage to the chrome.
