Yeah, not only is it bad for dental work, but ingesting lead has its drawbacks.

Louis, good comment on the training part.

I don't know squat about training for hunting, but I'd like to think I'm pretty good at behavior training.

Eye contact is big.

If you have an opportunity, watch the pups with it's mates. Watch and see how they play their domination games. You'll gain valuable clues that you can use in your training to help discipline the pup.

My bigger mutt (have no idea what she is, strong terrier (pit-bull) influence, would play with her siblings, and when one would dominate, it would simply accomplish this by resting it's paw on the nape of the other's neck. This would cause the other to readily submit. I used this cue with her, and it was like magic. During her formative months, if she misbehaved, or was doing something that wasn't acceptable, simply resting my mitt on her neck, and firmly telling her no while looking her in the eye would do the trick.

However, that trick would not work on my wife's headstrong Dachshund. I found a simple "scruffing" on the nape worked well with her. Scruffing, is not quite twisting. Merely, correcting the pup the same way it's mother would. Collect the loose skin behind the neck, and lift the pup up gently, and just so it's rear paws come off the ground the way it's mother would carry it, tell it no, and put it back down. They don't understand English, but they associate no with something they don't want to do to displease you. The "scruffing" is a language they speak. They come right back in line, and there is no fear response towards the human. A lot of canine discipline in the past was based on fear inducing tactics, hitting, holding the dog down on it's back, all sorts of weird stuff. They did nothing, but cause the dog to cower if you expressed displeasure with what it has done.

Great site Trapper. I hunted quail as a kid with my dad. A good bird dog is an absolute joy watch. I found that type of hunting a lot more exciting than larger game. I hope to get back into it soon.

Good post Tim. I will add that I have had luck with similar methods but completely holding the puppy down and keeping my body over it the whole time. Also, letting out a guttural growl if the puppy is doing something wrong will instill right from wrong at early age.

I hunt pheasant, ducks and grouse, but I can't be bothered to learn anything more about it.

Quail? Why would I kill something that tiny? Perhaps I should 12-gauge some butterflies while I'm at it?

I love quail and phesant! Never hunted big game. For quail you can always go with a 20 guage. Makes it more of a challenge.

Oh ya love the site. I forwarded it to my hunting buds.

It may sound stupid to those that don't know, but yes it works!

You're speaking a language they understand, and it goes a long way in their minds.
