(a bit of a long read) Long story short I've been on a business trip this past week, so I've been in some riding and videogame withdrawl. I had today off so with perfect weather (low 80's, low humidity, low wind, partly cloudy) I deside it's time to go fire up the 1 and head on out. As I start to go north of town I come across a little dog the just reached my side of the road. I'm on a nice 2 lane highway with a center turn lane so I'm sure I'll have no trouble getting by him. Like a good dog he keeps going and is far away from the road by the time I get up there, but what I didn't notice was the much BIGGER dog chasing the little dog! I'm in the right lane on my side and I start to have a flash back, back to my MSF class a few years ago and the old days of parking lot practice. It's looking like he's going to just keep crossing the road but I have no trust and I think I may have said a few choice words when riding up on this situation! I drop down from 70mph to about 40mph after I notice that I've been blessed by having no traffic around me. The dog is now in the right lane so I take the left. Just as I change lane he see me and starts to turn around.... all I can think is change angle and speed, so I tap the brake learn a bit left and then nail the gas. I think he was only about 2 feet from me when I went by him but it still got the heart pumping a bit. Ok, so if that wasn't fun enough about 2 miles up the same road I see that a log truck has overturned while trying to merge onto the highway. Now I'm really starting to think that this just isn't the day to ride. But it's just too nice so I keep going. Now I've turned off from the main highway and I'm on a well maintained county road. If I would have known that they were resurfaceing the road I never would have gone this way. Anyway to make this already long story a bit shorter I came up to the road crew and they were doing the one way traffic at a time thing with the flag men directing traffic. The first thing that I notice when I get stoped at the flag man is that I'm just over the top a big hill and there is no way anyone will be able to see me stoped until they are on top of me. And with the way the ride has started I'm not too happy with the variable falling this way! And now the story ends with an unlikely twist. While I'm sure I'm going to get rear ended (bike is in gear and I'm ready to make some quick desions if need be) I see a red suburban stop about 500 ft behind me. Then it comes to me that a cager is actually looking out for me. He is back far enough the people comeing up the hill will be able to see that he is stopped. The rest of the ride was great and I just got done washing the bike. Now it's time to kill the video game craving with some Oblivion. I'm still trying to get used to the fact that a cager was looking out for me like that. Something tells me he must be a fellow rider |
