Default NASCAR: Atlanta

What can I say about Jimmie Johnson?

He's on fire, and he's got a hell of a streak at Atlanta. I'd say he'll be the top finishing Chevy at Atlanta.

Of course, this is getting to be repetitive. Four weeks of racing now, and the top picks are either a Roush or Hendrick's entry.

On the Roush side of things, I gotta pick Carl Edwards. Carl has this place figured out. He won twice here last year. I'll go out on a limb and predict Mark Martin will have an excellent finish also, followed closely by Greg Biffle and Matt Kenseth.

Other Top Ten spoilers are going to be:

Junior-He's up and down here, but the shop has good notes for set-ups. Hell Mikey got a top ten finish here last year.

Kasey Kahne-He's been knocking on the door for a win at this place for a while now. I'd say the highest finishing Dodge. Top five.

Tony Stewart-He and Junior have a good love hate relationship with this place, Charlotte, and Texas. Definite top ten.

Jamie McMurray-He's had some great finishes here in the Dodge cars. He'll finish well in a Roush car.

Brian Vickers-For some reason, the 25 team has always been able to figure this track out, going back to when Jerry Nadeau piloted the car. Vickers inherited the setups his first year, and has had decent runs here.

Kyle Busch--Again, goes to show what the sharing of information does for helping teams out. When the 25 and 5 started working out of the same shop, it did wonders for both.

Kurt Busch-Good finishes in his Roush days. The Penske notebook isn't lacking for good setups here too. Between Rusty and Ryan Newman, they've had some good setups, just the aero package on the car has been the limiting factor.

Ryan Newman-See Kurt Busch. One thing I like about Ryan is he and Matt Borland will look at raw data. What they see in the data, is what they will do. That was where Rusty and him didn't get along. Rusty would look at their stuff (setups) and say that won't work. Whereas Ryan would say that the data suggests it will, and he would trust it. Look at all the Poles he garnered last year. The limiting factor is the aero package on the car.

Jeff Gordon-Of course. Again, see last week. Jeff needs to get the seat time in testing rather than rely on data from other teams or sending development drivers. This was one thing Dale Earnhardt Sr. was doing towards the end there, and then about '99 or '00 I started noticing he was going to the test sessions himself instead of sending one of the Sauter's. The results proved themselves on the track.

Regardless of what happens on the track or who finishes where, make sure you are watching the last twenty laps. The closing laps at this place has been particularly good for the last four or so years, so it's a decent race to watch.

The pick for the win is Carl Edwards or Jimmie Johnson.

The rest are candidates for the top ten.

However, there are 43 drivers in the field. All with a "legitimate" shot at winning according to NASCAR. On any given Sunday, anything can happen. I've seen some weird things happen since 1976.

I did work at a Pier years ago. I was an Apprentice. My duties included showing Northern tourists/customers how to properly bait their hooks with strange (to them) baits such as Shrimp, Squid, and Sand Fleas. Diligently learning all aspects of tasks assigned to an Apprentice, and attrition of other employees, I soon became a Master Baiter. Impressive title....No?

Can Ryan Newman get another pole?

He's got six here, and sat on the front row in seven of the last eight races.

I don't know how long Jimmie Johnson's luck can hold out. Atlanta is a racy track. My Psychic Friend says Clint Bowyer is going to bag his first Cup victory at Atlanta Sunday. You heard it here first. If he doesn't, well, there's always the edit button....

Great truck race tonight!

As for the winner on Suday, The modern day Atlanta Master gets it done in a stunning upset! Bobby Labonte! The famed 43 returns to victory lane!

They need to get the cup boys out of there. They just stink up the show. I didn't get to see it, but I see Jeff Burton won. I like Jeff, but I want to see all the cup guys out. I think they should be allowed no more than 5 starts a year if you have a Nextel cup contract. Just my opinion!

I'll say I'm biased because my driver has been Edwards since he entered the trucks. I tend to get annoyed with the cup guys who don't actually race the full Busch Schedule.

It's an up/down thing. NASCAR likes it because the cup regulars make sure people tend to buy both weekend tickets. I was more relaxed about it when carl was just in his 1st full season of Nextel, but I can see others points on it.
