Thumbs up New PM for Canada!

As of tomorrow Canada will have a new Prime Minister in Stephen Harper. No one really knows what he stands for yet, hope he keeps good relations between us and our good friends south of the border. All the best!

Are you sure that you want to maintain close relations with "Dubya".

Wouldn't it be better for the Canadian national security to just lay low until 2008, then make friends with the new US president?

Such hostility! Anyone have anything good to say about him (or any public servant, for that matter)?

i think you will see him in there for at least 2 years since the Liberal party now needs to rebuild $$$ and find a new Leader. I think you will see Frank McKenna as the next Prime Minister in 2009.

It also depends on what changes Harper wishes to make.
Same sex marrages and women's choice may bring him down sooner.

Regardless of what Harper stands for (and really no one knows yet) it is time for change. The outgoing Liberals are bankrupt, corrupt and self-serving. Time will tell what the future holds but Harper is certainly younger, more charismatic and eager to prove himself. Plus he is surrounded by some pretty good people that can do a good job if they are given the proper portfolios. As for me, I wish him luck.

He is on a rampage to cut taxes (GST) and not tax investment income provided it is re-invested (capital gains). That seems to be like a decent plan in the short term. Hope he can make up the shortfall from other sources that won't hurt the citizens.

I really don't know what the options were at the time - or in 3 years; maybe Hillary, that way the Bush/Clinton monopoly may continue. In fact all the recent US presidents have brought lots of interesting stuff to the table, like Clinton & Monica, his popularity went through the roof since so many people realized he's just an ordinary man driven by testosterone. OK maybe he lied a bit "I did not have sex with that woman". I guess he really enjoyed the odd Cohiba, regardless of how it was applied!

The funny thing is, Clinton is the only person I know of who used a fat woman as a humidor. Don't know if I should feel sorry for the cigar or not.

To my Canadian friends, I wish you the best! Not too sure about your politics, but at least ours can keep you entertained.

I only hope that most Americans relize that although she was not elected as presedent she has already held that office. Someone had to run the country while Billy was chasing skirts.

Our new PM is going to be all right after all. I read in todays paper (National Post) that his wife can often be seen zooming around Ottawa on her "Motorcycle".

Now isn't that great, how many other first ladies' ride a bike.

Way to go Ms. H.

Default A Canadian Conservative is an American Moderate

I got a bit of national election returns on a US cable station. It was interesting to me how PM Martin had attempted to portray himself as some type of nationalist and Harper as some type of suck-up to American interests. A desperate ploy by Martin at best. Neither one of those stereotypes is true and the Canadian electorate knew it. Nothing all that wrong with Martin and nothing all that great about Harper... but we will see. As a semi-frequest visitor to southern BC for vacations, I love BC and consider it part of our shared Northern Pacific family (Oregon Washington, BC and Alaska so I follow some Canadian politics. (I've also been to Quebec City twice on vacation, Montreal once, Calgary, Banf, Jasper & Edmonton once, and the Martimes once).

in politics.

Jimmy Carter. A nice guy, and therefore, in some folks eyes a failed President. Since his presidency though he has acted as a goodwill ambasador, built houses for the needy (with his own 2 hands) and contributed time and resources to many a charitable endeavor.

It's funny to hear people %%%%% and moan about "W" and Hillary. I'm no fan of either one really (too much a libertarian am I), but they where both freely elected to their respective offices, buy a majority of voters (even if Bush's numbers where a bit shakey). If you don't like your leaders, then take an active role in the politcal process. Find a worthy candidate and do all you can to champion there cause. Oh yeah, and vote for goodness sake.

That is the biggest problem, people complaining like heck, but do not even bother to vote.
