I fell in a creek back in Dec of 1981 with my brother while hunting grouse . He crawled out over my back then threw me a branch to climb out on. Then it was a 3 mile walk back to the house in the freezing cold. I was shivering so back I could hardly walk to the house . All my cloths were frozen solid and could stand by themselves when I took them off.
I tell you that was one hard day.

True story........

A couple of weeks+ ago..Some one spotted some sweat clothes on a pond/lake-(can't remember which for sure)...here in Omaha. They called the police, a crew was called in and started dredging-(sp?) the water, and were showing the clothes found on TV all the while noticing that they were of different sizes, so they assumed that TWO people fell through the ice.

While all this is going on, a teens mother thought the clothes in question looked familar, she called Police headquater's to report what she thought was her son's.

Turns out her teenage Son and his girlfriend were skating on the ice the night before, fell through, somehow managed to get out, took off there outerwear and went home.

The news mentioned this outcome and went on to say that the ice was only 2-3 inches thick.

WHAT DORKS!!....but I was happy to hear they were ok.

Well Jane

Not to long ago, the temp only got into the upper teens during the week, so I was dressed pretty warm 'round the house, that week-end though, it got up in the thirties, talk about a warm spell...I got so hot, I had to take off my shirt!

Today/right now it's a wopping 10 degree's out, so I'm wearing the warmer stuff again....can't wait till this week-end though...it's supposed to get up in the fifties, WOW....I'll be able to get out my shorts!!

Mavman...I didn't see that story about the ice. Since all my family is from there, I ususally check out KETV's site to see what is going on back there. My parents live on Beaver Lake and talked to them yesterday. I guess their lake is frozen across, not sure how thick.

That sort of thing is common knowlege around here. For the record, 3 inches of clear ice is plenty for a few people to skate on as long as you can verify that there aren't any thinner areas nearby. It won't even crack as you move on it.

I had my brother's four-wheeler on about 4 inches a few weeks back and heard nary a crinkle in it.

Ok...I found the story....they were feeding the bird, not skating.

Is Halleck park the one in Downtown Papillion?

I rarely go out to WOWT, probably cuz I never really like the TV station when I lived there. I grew up out by Sapp Bros, could see the coffee pot from my neighborhood. Amazes me everytime I go home how much it changes out there.

Since we're right in the middle of a brutal cold spell (it's going down to 50* tonight) I'll be real careful about ice in the river.

I am a certified Ice Rescue Specialist....went thru the training with a fire dept up in Mn when I lived there. Then later as a member of the CG Auxiliary, I did refresher trianing with the CG up in Duluth Mn in Jan. We did this in Duluth harbor and broke thru about 4in of ice to get in the water. We wore the gumby suits and actually were pretty warm. When we got out, I had to unzip the suit to cool down, and we had steam coming out in the cold air. Not much need for my training here in Georgia now.
