Default Suzuki Concept Bike "Stratosphere"

Quote:

And for those of you who can't speak German ...

"As a total suprise, Suzuki presented the concept-study "Stratosphere" with a water-cooled, inline 6-cylinder engine. With an exceptionally smooth ride, half-automatic shifting, compact dimensions like a I-4, modern fuel injection, dual overhead cams, 4 valves per cylinder and 1100ccm of displacement, it is expected to produce around 180 horsepower at 12000 rpm. If and when the Stratosphere will go into series production is unclear. What is clear is that it runs. And it could become the next generation of the legandary Suzuki Katana."

Huh? The 2005 GSX-R 1000 has 178hp, and the Hayabusa 175hp. I honestly don't think that 2 hp more or less make a difference at that level. What amazes me is that they get 6 cylinders pumping at 12000 rpm. I chose my long-boar I-4 because I wanted a low RPM engine. I would imagine that an I-6 screaming at 12000 rpm would be like six screaming babys with feedback from one of 'Nuts amplifiers.

like I said way to much power for a bike unless you are a racer and I leave that for the trails and four wheels

The new '06 R6 (from the showroom, not the racetrack) redlines at 17,500 rpm. I bet that is interesting.

Wow, this Suzuki concept bike is ugly....

???

An F1 racecar redlines around 20,000 rpm. (Okay, that's a V-10 engine, but still). If they keep that up, they'll have to start building bikes with Wankel engines to get around the valve-float problems.

It seems that I may have to offer a dissenting view. This is merely a concept bike, and as such, the concept can be improved upon to suit the market. With the i6 powerplant and half-auto shifting, I see more potential as a sport tourer instead of a Katana replacement. If the frame was enlarged enough to accommodate hard saddlebags and trunk, the front end modified slightly to accommodate an adjustable windshield, and the chain drive replaced with a shaft drive, I would happily pluck this bike from the showroom floor. Comfy seats help too.

So if they changed everything but the engine, you'd like it?

Yup. Really, it would be nice to see Suzuki produce a sport tourer to compete with the ST1300 and FJR1300 and I felt this concept bike would be the perfect platform for such a bike. I suppose I could have said just yank the bloody motor out and make a sport tourer out of it.
