I know I feel pretty dry after riding a couple hundred miles.

It would seem to me that 3Dachs and sunny are right: The increased airflow would result in more evaporation, which is the primary cooling mechanism of the body, so you would be cooler (after all that IS the point of sweating) and thus, would sweat less.

. . . but that doesn't explain the drymouth after a good ride. [scratches head]

I've been to the desert, if that's where you are, so I know what it is like. Field exercises at Fort Polk in July was worse IMO.

Oh, wait a minute, Air Force = Temper tents. Or hard billets. Or air-conditioned trucks. Now that's some REAL training.

Hell in the air force we have all of these chairs. We have to have body to sit in them if not we wasted tax payers money. Same thing with the A/C units we crank up all the way. They are there so we use them

Sorry ... that didn't come across like I meant it to.

The soldiers are doing a mostly thankless job, and are doing their best. I have enormous respect for them - putting their lives on the line every day.

I'm just tired of watching the freedoms that they are fighting to defend being eroded away in the name of "homeland security". Today, France announced that it is suspending the Schengen treaty (allowing for free travel throughout the European Community) and reinstating border controls, because of the fear of terrorism. Whether we like it or not, the terrorists are winning right now - our world is becoming more controlled and paranoid, instead of becoming more open and free (as I think it should be).

Your rate of respiration increases, causing your mouth to dry. Secondly, the increase in adrenaline causes a decrease in the production of saliva.

Relative humidity drops off quickly when the temp is that high. You rarely see RH above 50% when it's over 95*. Still, that's hot.

We did 400 miles Monday in 90+ temps. We did 600 miles Tuesday in 90+ temps. We did 500 miles yesterday in 80 and 90+ temps. Boy, did I feel like an idiot with my full gear on. Hydration was a major problem.

Inspiron, that was a low blow regardless of what you meant. I have half a mind to remove it so no other military see it.

You're body is just being efficient. Keeping your mouth moistened is a low priority when your body is under any stress, and a 200 mile ride can be a bit stressful. The bodies moisture goes where it's needed. Lubing the joints and muscles, and keeping the blood in proper proportions is more important. If your mouth is feeling dry then take along some gum, that will stimulate saliva production.

Maybe in MN but not in Texas or the rest of the Gulf Coast states. It can be 110 and 80% without even sweating. The weather that is not us humans.

+1 on the camel back, use it one for mountain biking, would think it would work fine if you stuck the hose up in through your helmet and drank when needed so there would be no need to take your hands of the bars while riding

Default Hydration

You might want to buy some Elete tablets that replace the electrolytes. One with a cup of water. Be sure to keep a Camel bladder in your tank bag where you can get to the hose (put ice in the bag and have a 90degree bite valve.
Drink WHILE you ride....if you wait an hour or so it can be too late.
And, by the way, MESH jackets speed the dehydration process and acually the body becomes a HEAT SINK. So get a Joe Rocket Sahara evaporative vest while wearing a MESH jacket. Good for about 2 hours before you have to wet the vest again.
Been there and done that in South Louisiana!
And, if you are over 60 as I am, this can be a definite life-saver.
