I've been a Bon Jovi fan all the way though. I just think he's a good guy. I was really into Dokken, too. Neither are metal, but since it was mentioned.

I had a few drinks with Don Dokken back in the early 80's when they opened up for Krokus in a small bar. Nobody even knew who these guy's were then.

The eighties was all about the mainstreaming of new wave, out of the late '70's punk. I could list many excellent bands of the '80's that stood the test of time. A great decade for music, but not so great for metal.....If you want metal, you have to look to the '70's for the classics and then again as metal and punk are transmorgified in the early '90's into "grunge".

Wow...I musta missed it. I've been laboring under the delusion that all of the bastard genre's that birthed in the 70's blossomed into full blown industries in the 80's. Everything that was underground came to the forefront and split into even more diversified genres, and thusly no longer became a dirty secret like a crazy Aunt in the attic for radio programmers. Hmmn....Maybe I missed it. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. Didn't AC/DC become a household name in the 80's? What about Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, & Whitesnake? Motley Crue, Metallica, Anthrax, Mercyful Fate, Savatage? Am I wrong, or didn't metal morph or split from Wizards and Dragons (Dio, Black Sabbath, Ozzy) being the norm into something a little more universal. Hence, the rise of the L.A. Hairbands. Didn't we have speed metal, death metal, christian metal, hair bands, glam metal (defined as costumes and gimmicks)? Didn't every band have a superstar guitarist? A singer that could sing? Each one no matter what sub genre had the formula. A singer that could shatter glass, a guitarist that could shred, a drummer that could kill a set of skins, and a bassist that could keep it all together. Each band would try and out do the other. Yeah the hairbands probably did the most damage to the genre. I figure when you start pandering to the chicks, and writing power ballads, it's over. The guys in the audience start looking for something with a little more credibility. Nirvana's Nevermind is heralded as the end of metal as most of us know it, but the real death knell was when Pearl Jam's 10 blew up alongside it, and leant credibility to the Seattle scene. We were getting a little tired of the theatrics so the anti-rock star theme of Seattle music was a welcome change. But that led to the modern interpretation of the post punk whatever the hell it is now that dominates. Lord forbid a band member should solo on a record. There are a few bright spots coming Avenged Sevenfold (damn! they solo in a song on the radio!) is one...there are others. Bottom line....IMHO....the eighties was great for Metal, no matter derivative. There are many great bands...too many to list, but I don't see the parallels in musicianship in todays songs that were so commonplace fifteen-twenty years ago. Yeah...song structure has changed, however, even the crappiest hair metal band could outplay most of the bands now. (IMHO again) BTW--I don't recall seeing W.A.S.P. anywhere here......

OK.. I agree that the quality of vocals and musicianship that metal had (mostly) is just not found in todays music. That all changed in the early '90's. There's a different aesthetic now... much more of the "amateur sound" (that's what I call it) is popular now, and this was also true of grunge... the amateur garage band sound. Still, I think most of the '80's metal band listed by everyone were anywhere from bad to mediocre. I heard it before in the 70's when it was fresh and original. Of the 80's metal bands I think Metallica and the Scorpions were about the best.

Actually, the garage movement of today is where all the good music is. I don't mean Nickleback, Staind, and all that stuff that just sounds bland and uninspired. I mean good original music. I'm talking bands like The Strokes, The Vines, and The Darkness. Don't laugh at The Darkness. If you can get past the singer's falsetto, they make some good music. I mean c'mon, they adamantly use 70's style Les Pauls, stand in front of WALLS of Marshall amps, and the singer wears a 70's style jump suit. Ya gotta love the throwback aspect of that band. I agree whole heartedly, since the Seattle thing died down, the music biz (from the outside) appears to be adrift. Declining sales......It's their own fault. They've been producing crappy albums for years. I've never bought so many cd's before that only have one worthwhile song on them.

I have been to most of those concerts listed myself and don't see to many today as the cost is to high, $8-12 for a ticket in the 80's was just right!
