| Refrigerator Magnet Test Engineer ![]() | Met my father last night and had a few at Cooper's Seafood house. We go just about every Tuesday. They keep about 24 different beers tapped and rotate many craft beers every month. Nice joint, a little price at times, but nice. Well, we had Beck's Octoberfest. I thought about it and nobody mentioned Beck's. I know, most people hate it because it is like the Budweiser of Germany, but it is a great beer. I prefer the Beck's original(now called Becks' Dark here). The Beck's Light or not dark is a great refreshing beer. They have been doing it right for a long time and the Octoberfest is no exception.

I've been to some Distributor's warehouses, and the damn things are open air (in the Florida heat), and I believe Hell's ninth circle would be cooler. Which brings up this open ended question: Isn't beer supposed to be treated like milk? If so, then why bother? With the way it's handled in transport and storage it kinda defeats the manufacturers directions and claims about purity, freshness, and all that other good stuff. Am I right? Discuss......

| Well, I can tell you that Guinness tastes MUCH better (i.e. fresher) in Europe than in the U.S. I am guessing the voyage across the pond degrades it somewhat. - Nut

| Refrigerator Magnet Test Engineer ![]() | It all depends on how it is originally shipped. Beer lasts a long time when kept at an average temp. While it is not true that all Europeans drink their beer warm, they are also not against a room temp beer. If is beer is shipped cold, ie Coor's, and the distributor puts it in a warm area, yep, ruined! If it is shipped at room temp and kept at a similar temp it will stay good for quite some time. Then you can chill to your content. The exception, if it is extemely warm, like Florida temps in an open air warehouse, this will affect the flavor of the beer. After all beer is brewed, which means it is cooked, for a certain amount of time and at a certain temp based on the brand's requirements. Add heat after fermentation and bottleing and you just chaned the way the beer is made and it can and in most cases (no pun intended) will change the flavor and even the color. Take a fresh case of bud, put a six in the cubboard at room temp, put a six in the trunk of your car and a six in the fridge. Wait a week or two, take them out and pour a bottle of each into their own glass, look at the color and then taste each one. While they all won't be bad, they will have definite different taste. Try it, it works.

I like Carlsburg, one of my favorites. Well, they have breweries around the world. Including Canada and Japan. Around here they get it from Canada a lot. Well, I only bought it once. First of all they charge the same for it, second it sucks! Not the same beer! So I make sure I get Carlsburg that was brewed on Copehagen, DK only. It is on the box. Don't confuse this with the importer, that will be different. Sopporo bought in the US is made in California, it is not imported. The other factor is a lot of European Brewers make their beers a little different for shipment to the US, including Guiness. They may use preservatives or brew just a little longer to keep it from spoiling on the trip over here. Also, Guiness is a Nitrogen charged beer, so, if you buy it by the can or bottle it is much different than if you get it from a proper Guiness tap. PHEW, \\\wipes sweat from head/// I love BEER!

| Excellent! Chic.. Now...let's bring this one level further. Is it all Beer to be treated as milk? OR just Kegged Beer, and not Bottled? As has been suggested above.

| That explains it, I had a heineken in Europe and I swore the girl poured me something else when I wasn't looking! Then I ordered another, asked for the same rather than order by name just to make sure I got whatever it was that she previously poured, and watched as she poured this beer from the heineken tap. I couldn't believe it, what a difference. I can't drink heineken here in the states, just too many other beers that I think taste a WHOLE lot better. Thanx... |

| Refrigerator Magnet Test Engineer ![]() | I've had Great White. Not bad for a wheat beer. Purple Haze, I have had that also. Too fruity for me. (and I mean Raspberry flavor). I don't particularly care for fruit in beer. Only when it is used to subtlely enhance flavor, not when it overpowers the beer. If I want fruit, I'll buy a wine cooler.
