Must've been like that Joe Pesci movie "gone fishing" that nobody watched either.

Doesn't really explain the airplanes, though.

Yup, an earth fart.

That same special reckoned that some day it could be economically viable to harvest this hydrite, and that there was quite a large field of it on parts of the ocean floor.

If you think that's too far fetched, remember, here in the states we're finally getting around to using the methane that comes from decomposing garbage to do things like generate electricity.

Future generations are going to look back at us and say "boy they knew how to waste resources."

Ah, yes, but there are theories that harvesting the hydrite and burning it for energy will return the tons of trapped CO2 back into the atmosphere, further accelerating global warming.

Until we find a way to use completely recyclable technology, it's as a good a plan as any.

Just the other week, the history channel had a "green series" on.

The argument was, 10 % of Arizona covered in either solar panels or windmills could power the U.S.

My answer "for about 5 hours a day."

Right now we're digging tar sand out of Canada, is that better than hydrite off the bottom of the ocean?

Clive Cussler actually did a search for this plane too. It's in one of his sea hunters books if I remember correctly.

Well, those guys could've technically crossed the ocean and after reaching Newfoundland, could've crashed into the ocean along the Atlantic coast.

Once in the ocean, the wooden airplane and all would have disintegrated in a matter of years. Maybe a couple of decades on the outside.

Don't quite understand how there would've been a "profound change in history." had Lindbergh not made it across the Ocean.

Let's see who made the next few developments in airplanes.......

Jimmy Doolittle.......flew several of the fastest planes, American
Jimmy Doolittle.......flew across the country on instruments, first person to do so, including landing the plane on instruments, American.
Wiley Post......flew higher into the atmosphere than anybody and developed the first pressurized suit to deal with the lack of pressure and oxygen, American.
Amelia Earhart....disappeared in the process that you could fly around the planet, a good chunk of which was done on instruments, and nearly succeeded at her risky venture, American.

Notice a common thread?

I find it amusing that with the exception of the Concorde, the United States has led the way in aviation for over 60 years.

Sixty years? Wasn't there a couple of brothers who started the whole thing around 100 years ago?

There were significant gains made by Europeans from just before world war 1 to the late 20's.

My favorite is that the South Carolina license plates say "first in flight" and the Ohio plates say something like "home of aviation"

The most amusing thing I read about the Wright brothers is that their propellers were 80 % efficient and by and large about twice as efficient as anybody else in the world at that time.

Now, props are way more efficient; 86 % by last measure.

IIRC, the Germans (Messerschmitt) were the first to build aircraft with jet engines. But they were still in early development at the end of WWII, and the US captured the plans and engineers during their march through Germany.

I caught a special on American fighter planes of world war 2, nobody here took them very seriously, and they very difficult to build and maintain.

It wasn't until the ME 262 Swallow was seen that we changed our perspective.

Also did some other digging around, and when the war ended there was a P-51 (H I believe) that was capable of something like 480 mph. Which would've been a 40 mph increase over the model then serving on the front lines.

The tidbit I find most interesting is that although the X-1 broke the sound barrier in the fall of '46, an experimental version of the F-86 broke same said barrier in a shallow dive only 6 months later.
