Default 5 day mountain excursion

On tuesday my parents are showing up in Georgia on their Goldwing, Wednesday morning we're rolling out of middle Georgia and heading for the mountains....a big red 'wing and a mean black M should make for an interesting cruising combination.

We've got the Cherohala, BlueRidge Pkwy, Dragon, NC28 and some others on tap for the trip. We'll be based in Alcoa, TN for a few nights and the Charlotte, NC for one night, returning to GA on Sunday evening.

I'll post pics/mileage/road info etc as we go....it's amazing the amount of stuff you can pack into a Goldwing with a trailer behind it.....

I hope you and your parents enjoy yourselves and be safe. I rode Saturday morning in the north GA mountains thru Burnt Mountain and Suches and then home to Cumming. The weather was perfect. Be on the look out for bicycles. Almost caught me two on Saturday morning.

Have fun, pray for good weather. Let us know how the dragons tail, cherohala & BR Pkwy compare to each other. Like scenery, road condition and which one you like best and why.

It looks like we're going to be starting out in the rain this morning. It's been a pretty steady downpour since the middle of the night, we have an estimated departure time of 0900, we'll see what happens between now and then....the rain gear and full-face helmet are out and ready....

Default Day 1 Ride Report

We left Milledgeville, GA around 9:20am EST this morning and headed north. The first few hours were gray, wet and ugly. We got soaked and it was slow going all the way north of Athens. Here's the route:

441N from Milledgeville, GA to Baldwin, GA
23/105/115 to 129N through Blairsville, GA
76W across to GA5 When GA5 crosses into Tennessee it becomes TN68
US411N into Alcoa, TN

Road reports 129N heading into Blairsville has some nice twisty stretches, the road is in good repair and the scenery is excellent.

76W is nice and flat, good shape coming across the top of GA

TN68 is beautiful. Up and down some hilly sections, nice mountain twisties and it is new blacktop! There isn't much for shoulders, but the road is great.

Mileage so far today is approx. 285mi. We had to search for the hotel, it added a couple of miles to the trip....

I'll try and post pictures when I get a chance....

Default Day 2 Report

We survived the Dragon....twice. The only thing that didn't make it was the squirrel that the 'wing took out in one of the curves.

The dragon is the road for the twisties.

We rode NC 28 for a long ways. It's a good ride too. Most of the roadway was in good shape, there were a couple parts through some national park where the road was in bad shape close to the outside lines, but otherwise it was good.

NC28 dropped all the way back into Georgia and we cut across on Warwoman road. Warwoman is in good shape with some nice twisties as well.

We came back north on 129 and some other random state highways, a few detours here and there one reroute due to a car accident, and some GPS idiocies....

Total today came to 313.9 miles. The majority of it was in the curves....I got the M all the way over to drag frame by the kickstand our second time through the dragon. Bike held up well for the whole ride, seems to like the twisties...

Default Day 4 Report

We headed south out of Alcoa today and picked up the Cherohala Skyway from Tennessee to North Carolina. Picked up NC28 headed south and then found some highway through the Cherokee Indian Reservation. After winding up the mountains through the reservation we picked up the Blue Ridge Parkway. Hit some nasty rain right as we got to the highest elevation on the BRP.

Had lunch at the Pisgah Inn, pretty good food, nice views.

After the BRP took interstate and highways to Charlotte. Total today is 343.0 miles.

Tomorrow brings some interstate and then some more north Georgia mountains, including Wolf Pen Gap.
