Uggh. 500 lbs. of off-roader, plus gear. No thanks.

i've never tried anything like that...
but if 500+ bike and gear is that bad, why do they make bikes like the the BMW adventure?

just curious, cuz i'd think i'd love to go trolloping in the bush like that...

It's not so much the weight that would be the problem, as it would be the riding position, you need to be able to be comfortable standing up on the pegs, than theirs the short travel suspension & smaller diameter front wheel found on most street bikes.

Don't get me wrong, lighter is better, but you can deal with some extra weight so long as your suspension is set up properly.

I think this particular ride could be done on most any bike because they are going to have by-passes around all the tough sections, but Clint's Bandit would not be the best tool for the job. It could do it, but at the end of the day he'd be one sore, tired SOB.

I've browsed through the LoneWolfExpeditions site and have to admit that it does look like a lot of fun. I guess I'm starting to understand why we have those types of bikes.

If anyone here goes there needs to be some pics posted.

Looks like I will be going, but as Clint, Adam, and Vinnie already know from our trip to the Dragon, I am not very good at taking pictures, so don't expect much.
I get to caught up in the riding and forget to take the camera out.

Understandable. I of all people should not even mention pictures since I'm about as bad at it as anyone. It's just that when you're doing something neat and have the choice of stopping to take pictures or to continue doing that something that's neat, I just keep going.

Great River Gravel Ride 2008 - ADVrider

Well I didn't get much for pictures, but this link should give you some idea of the ride.

On the way down there Thursday afternoon, I found out how far a DR650 will slide on wet blacktop.
I hit some sort of oil slick half way through a 35 MPH left hander, and I went down so quick that I was already sliding on by back before I even knew I was falling.

Guess how much road rash you get from a 75 foot slide on wet blacktop with only your rain gear to protect you???????????????????????????????? Wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The answer is "NONE"

I couldn't believe that I slid that far, and never even tore my rain gear, and to make it even more unbeliveable, the bike was basically undamaged, a bent clutch lever, some scratches on the front fender, and left hand guard, left side bar end weight was missing, and the little rubber bumper on the shift lever was gone. That's it!!!!
That was at about the 200 mile mark for the W/E, and we did a total of just over 1,000 miles with no issues showing up. I did develop a slight exhaust leak, but I doubt that was as a result of the crash.

Dang, Rick! If my riding mentor can go down, where does that leave me?

I'll assume you had a good time (you don't really say).

You might as well just go jump off the porch and get it over with.
