Eww... that sucks

I hope they have a good ride back at least.

Pity they didn't get to ride the dragon during good weather.

They got to ride it in good weather but it was also 10:00 pm and pitch black.

They are intending on going either today or tomorrow still.

Sean. You alluded to a "bug in the eye incident". Any details?

On the way back to the hotel after leaving the church parking lot I was leading followed by BlackholeKelley, then Everett. Behind Everett was cms58, ShonR, and my brother Greg.

Well we hit some pretty tight turns and it was just after dusk. We started climbing the mountain and after about a mile lost sight of the others. So we all slowed down and finally stopped. No Chris, Shon, or Greg. So Everett was like,, "Oh H$ll something has happened."

We turned around and Everett, then Kelley, and I screamed back down the mountain. As I got towards the bottom here they came along with four other bikes in tow.

Apparantely a bug got up under Chris's helmet and nailed him in the eye and he came to a screeching halt. So they were all down there making sure he was alright.

That delay was enough time to give the others a chance to catch us. We didn't even know they were only five minutes behind us when we left out.

But we just knew something had happened and was relieved to have a bug in the eye.

Quite an experience for me! I lost total vision, burned the hell out of my eye and caused me to stop. After about five minutes we were back on the road again.

Could have been much worse.

I'm glad it was a mere annoyance!

Well it is not just the Dragon but the hundreds of miles around there as well. You can easily spend a week in that area, north of Knoxville, North Georgia and North Alabama, Eastern Tennessee, and Western North Carolina and not ride them all.

I am sure the others will have their own tales of the Tail of the Dragon when they get back. You could always sweet talk ShonR to riding down again!!!

The tail of the dragon is a super ride. Better than any rollercoaster at an amusement park! EVERYONE SHOULD RIDE IT AT LEAST ONCE. I am ready to go back.

Default The Dragon '08

Well I'm home. I rode straight through and got home last night. 500+ miles is no joke... It turned out to be a great trip! The days turned out almost perfect just after the Georgia crew left. It stinks we didnt get to ride as a group during daylight to enjoy the ride. The Dragon at night is an experience. I'd rather not do that again. ever. Most of the Minnisota crew had never been to the Dragon and they didn't fully grasp what they had done in the dark until our next pass through in daylight.

We explored the mini-Dragon. Before we got the courage to ride on past the end of the pavement, Tricker found a guy that was living in the woods at the top of that mountain. And I mean nothing but a walking stick and a small backpack!!! Then Rowdy chased a bear! Better him than me. I would have chosen the detour after that FrostbiteVinnie cracked me up with his ride bell. He couldn't get his boards to scrape but he heard his bell jingle. We stood around trying to figure out how much more he needed to lean. The funny part came when we noticed he only had a nub of a bell left. He had already been leaning so much that the bell was over half way gone. Haha, the hunt for beer was another challenge all by itself. Overall, it was a hell of a trip and I had fun.

The closest riding even compareable to the Dragon up here would be the back roads of W. Virginia. Even those roads are tame... With fuel stops, gearing up for bad weather, riding through that weather, and food stops, it took just about 11 hours

I believe they stopped in mid-Ill. for the night. it should be only a few more hours before they start parting ways for home..

Tuesday was the last day riding the area. We got 270 miles in N. Carolina, Tennesse, and Georgia. We were close to S. Carolina, but it was too late to take another detour.

I scraped all the rust off my floorboards from last years ride.

Ask the guys about thier 'off-roading' We were lucky Vinnie was a machinist.....

Did you guys run that route I input onto Rickster's GPS? If so did you do it all?

I'm afraid to ask about the offroading event.

I believe we did most of the route you provided. We took a couple of detours for some sightseeing, and we actually hit a town with cellphone coverage. Everybody had someone to call(or in Tricker's case, text) So near the end we took more detours to get home faster.

Except for the mile of gravel switchbacks past the mini-Dragon, all the other 'off-road' activities weren't planned... I'll refer you to the Minnisota crew for further questions. They might explain it diffirent. Ie... I didn't stall my bike going up the Foothills Parkway, I had an RPM malfunction! lol
