Hey got a question. I just talked to my brother and he said he would be interested in going up there on Saturday morning with me. We could trailer our bikes up there and then be there Saturday after lunch sometime. Then we might go riding around till you guys show up.

If.... you guys want to go riding Sunday around the area. I could lead that route I listed above or some variation of it which would lead us all away from the Dragon. Then after the ride is over my brother and I could load the bikes up and haul booty back to Atlanta since we both have to work on Monday.

Would you all be game for that?

Yup, the S50 is done for. I knew it was going to be expensive because of the parts bent or broken off, but I had no idea replacement parts would equal the price of a new bike. Heck this was only posted as a 20 mph curve. On the other hand when we slammed into the ditch it was a REALLY abrupt stop.

I don't know what it was that scared me that day, but for some reason I started to do a bunch of things wrong and went down real quick. This is a road with a few tight turns that I rode many times last year practicing my counter-steering, and should have known better. I still have a lot to learn.

Anyways, I'm getting another S50 just like the old one.

Like Ron White says, "you just can't fix stupid."

I hope he's wrong.

Well, Ron White was referring to stupid people. Even smart people make stupid mistakes.

If you look at the roads I posted they are pretty good twisty roads that all but challenge the Dragon and some of them are even a little better.

Some of the route will be a couple of the roads we took for the first Gatlinburg trip from NC 28 down towards the Highlands, but that is where it stops.

The part of NC 28 from Deals Gap south to the four lane is what they call HellBender 28. We will not be able to encompass that and you guys should look at it for part of your trip to the Dragon.

I spoke with my brother again and he is stoked about doing this. Wish we could do the whole week with you guys but gotta pay the bills. So I told "J" that it will be a brothers trip that weekend and she said that we shoulds do it.

That my friends is EXACTLY why I married her.

So as of right now count me and my brother in. If he cannot make it for some reaason then I will still plan on going.

I made us a reservation at the Phillips Motel for Saturday May 31st.

Are there going to be anyone who will be there earlier than Saturday or by noon on Saturday?

I've been down there twice, first time on the V Strom, than last year on the Road King. The Strom is wayyyyyy more fun on those roads.

Anyway, your logic is way off, you know darn good and well those "Jap" bikes don't break down.

I got a head scratcher for you regarding the Uly.

If you remember what we were talking about with the fuel.

Get this:

Two tanks ago....140 miles before a refill....about normal. Validated your theory of "winter gas".

Tank before last....130 miles. Absolutely the worst ever. Throws a tilt to your winter gas theory.

Last tank 152.5....yellow light comes on. Absolutely best amount of miles on a tank of gas ever.

If anything, I've gotten more conservative with the throttle. The only wild card in the mix is a new rear tire. A new tank of gas coincided with the addition of the rear tire.

I'm thinking your air pressure might have been a little low in the old tire.

Default It is done.

I have routed the route for Sunday the 1st. I have two varieties of it. First version is about 155 miles and according to the GPS should take 3-4 hours to run.

Second version is the same as the first except we add another 30 miles of twisties and will add about an hour total. This will encorporate Hellbender 28 and we can stop at Hellbender Racing, the dam if we want to, and will actually bring us to the intersection at Deals Gap at the bottom of the Dragon.

But we will turn south back to Robinsville at that point and leave the Dragon for you guys later on. Hellbender 28 is a pretty cool route and I have always wanted to stop in at the Hellbender Racing but we never do becasue of time constraints.

If we can get on the road Sunday morning by 9:00 no later than 10:00 than we could easily be back in Robinsville by 3 to 4 pm. Which will give my brother and I a chance to get loaded back up and headed back to Atlanta for work <sigh> on Monday. Lucky guys get to goof off for a few more days around there.

If any of you are going to get there by noon to 1:00 on Saturday we might go tooling around, go run the Dragon, or hit the Cherohala Skyway if any of you are game. Just let me know.

I tried to copy the Mapsource map and upload the route but I guess there is some kind of protection on that preventing me from doing so.

So if you want to look at the route here it is.
1. Depart Robbinsville south on US129
2. Take US 19/ US 74 North to Wayah Road
3. Wayah Road to Patton Road to US 64
4. US 64 East to US 23 South
5. US 23 to Warwoman Road East to Hwy 28 West
6. Hwy 28 continue West to the following:
A. Short route turn left onto Hwy 143 West to Robbinsville
B. Long route continue on Hwy 28 to US 129 South to Robbinsville
7. If we take the long route the intersection of Hwy 28 and US 129 is where Deals Gap is. If you turn right onto US 129 then you start the Dragon. Turn left and back to Robinsville you go. That will take you along the bottom of the dam and along some really cool rapids.

So there ya go. That is what I propose for Sunday if that is cool with you guys. One more thing if you guys want to go south into Georgia there are some really great roads around Helen plus Helen is a cool little place to check out too. That might be something to consider doing while you are over here in these parts.
