The arm's doing great, doesn't hurt at all. Should get the cast off friday and then to a smaller cast or brace.

The road rash on the other hand has been a real experience. Got it in two spots, not too big, expected it to hurt, but the pain was WAY beyond what I had anticipated. If I ever get back on a bike I'll be dressed like a friggin Storm Trooper.

Thanks,
-Mike

I know that pain. I rashed the outside of my knee (along with forearm, shoulder, side of palm...), and it took forever to close. Some of those places have almost no bloodflow, but tremendously sensitive nerves. I remember pulling the bandage off my knee like two weeks after the crash and being brought almost to tears by the pain. And I'm a carpenter! We take pain like lunch!

I ran Deals Gap a lot back in 1991-1994. Back then it was an empty but great condition road. You'd run it and see maybe a handful of bikes coming from the other direction. No cops and cars were quite a rarity. We would stay at the crossroads of time motel. I remember the Kawa ZX-11 had just come out and they had mounted a camera on it and sold the video at the store. I've heard it's changed some since then. I read something about the big tree that was there and that they hang stuff from it now. Anyhow, I'm gonna try to make it up there this July.

Yeah, I was doing something like that a few days ago, taking off a no stick bandage that WAS sticking. I think I would have passed out... ended up soaking it off in the shower. I swore then no more bandages, no more pealing off skin for me. So far it's working out better this way.

Yeah there's a store, a tree, and a twisty road. But if you go on across you'll get to the Cherohala Skyway and have blast. The Dragon is a "must ride one time ride" but the Skyway is much better.

I still have a few things to do, I took the skid plate off yesterday to have a crack welded up, that's all ready to be put back on, but I think I'll wait till after I get a few other things done first. It's easier to change the oil & filter with it off.

I have to get a new chain & sprockets, change the oil, and get the new front tire mounted. I'm also still trying to figure out what the best position is for my new drivers back rest, with the weather being so crappy I haven't been able to take a long enough ride to see if the position I have it in now is going to be good for a long trip.

I suppose I better get off my rear & get the chain & sprockets on pretty soon or I won't have the initial stretch out of the way before the trip, and I'll be needing to stop and adjust it somewhere on the ride down.

LOL. We're a month out yet, boys. Don't wear yourselves out with anticipation.

Adam, my strap-on duffel makes a great backrest. Maybe you'll have something similar?

i'll have my fully loaded backpack so that should help a little (or else i can just think it will). I'm just full of anticipation cause work is going to hell in a handbasket and i'm taking off when it will be almost there.

Well, I talked to the wife about joining you gents, did some mapping, turns out NC is a bigger state than I thought. I'm in the north east portion of the state, and it seems that i'm 8 hours out from the Gap. That means I'd have to take 1, probably 2 days off from work, and I don't think that will be possible with some of the things we have going on here in the same time frame . It's all good though, next time you guys go, (i hope theres a next time..) I'll try and join you, and i'll have some more experience under the belt to boot!

Do I need to come down there and straighten out your luggage situation? A backpack will suck on those long days, and it will be hot. Let's improve that for you. What are your plans at this point?

I need to get my baggage situation figured out. I did find some MC bags on EBay, thinking about it. Or I may just strap on an old duffle bag. Hummmmm.

Well the V Strom is all tore apart wating for the new parts to get here, I sure hope there isn't any problems with shipping, with any luck, by the end of the week I'll have fresh oil & new springs in the front forks, all new sprokets & chain, new rear brake pads, and a new front tire.

No problem with storage for me, I have a pair of 46 liter side bags, and two 35 liter trunks on the tail rack. I stack one trunk on top of the other. I usually come home with more stuff than I leave with, so I try and have one bag empty at the start of the trip, I've also been known to UPS stuff home if the load gets too big.

Scotty, are you joining our group? I don't remember hearing about that.

Edit: I found you in the Gatlinburg thread. What the hell are you doing in there? Please clarify your plans for us.
