Heck yeah. I have been looking forward to this for months now. BTW, apparently there is a fire on the NC side of the gap. Not too big but from what I understand it was caused by a rider going down, bike catching fire and then the forest fire. I don't think it will effect us except maybe more police patrols.

Oooooooooohhh yeah!

I saw that article, too. I wonder if it's dry in the area for some reason. I wouldn't have thought forest like that would catch so easily.

I'm going to start another thread for equipment/supplies. Let's keep it clean and free from extraneous discussion.

So does the extraneous discussion stay here?

We've been in draught conditions in NC for almost a year now, and the majority of the state has had a burn ban in effect for the better part of 6 months with the exception of a few specific days or licensed overseen clearing operations.
I've been watching your discussion, wishing like heck I could find the time to join you guys for even a day (i'm a few hours over on the eastern side of the state) But I keep telling myself I'm just not ready (experience wise) to ride the Gap yet, and won't be this year I don't think. But if any of you had consisdered camping, you're likely going to be forced to do so without a campfire. We've had more forest fires this year already than we usually have in the course of a whole year.
Have fun guys, and ride safe!

Yeah, thanks. And you certainly are welcome to hook up with us. We aren't on the Dragon but one day, and even then it's something you can ride at your pace. We'll always have meeting points.

Some info about the gap from another forum.

Tail of the Dragon at Deals Gap and Cherohala Skyway, Graham Co, NC

Lots of other info but most of it is difficult to discern if true or not, mostly bad.

hey charlie, the more people we meet, the better IMO. i guarantee i'm the most inexperienced in this group with only having had my cycle for about a year now and i've only put on 5800 miles on it so far. I didn't think i was ready but they're willing to take it easy if necessary. I'll probably have the most issues with riding the distance due to having a sport bike (no offense to the vstrom or the bandit).

I think I will be the one at a disadvantage once we get there. Big ole fat cruiser is not the best in the twisties.

Yeah, but you're a madman on it. Heck, we can trade and I'll polish your floorboards for ya.

There's a youtube video of two guys on yellow goldwings (approx 860#) doing a quick run through the Dragon with lots of floor board grinding. I think they welded plates to their floor boards to add a little wearing thickness though.

Not that I'm suggesting anyone here try this. In fact I would hate to see anyone go by me doing this, it's got to be a BIG surprise.

It's impressive that people can ride like that and might be neat to watch, but it's not for the public roads.

I met the rider doing the video, chasing bike, at the MPLS MC show. I think he did the dragon in 11 min. Crazy man!!!

I have done a bit of riding lately in the twisties but still paranoid of hitting those sandy patches!!!

11 miles in 11 minuets, that's a mile a min, or in other words 60 mph. All I can say is Wow, on that road a 60 mph average is just plain nuts. 15 min end to end is fast, 11 min is just plain crazy.

If you were to see the video you would say wow. GW's really cranked up, catching boards every turn and basically hauling a$$. They throw those monster bikes around like toys.

The guy that used to do videos on the Goldwing would run from the store to the overlook which is nine miles. That's how he did the 1000 mile run too.

BTW, I have the "Ride Like a Pro on the Dragon" DVD. It has a few hints but mostly is a documentary on the Dragon. Also has a part with Rick Pepin (Yellow wolf.) If anyones interested I'll send it out, as long as it makes it home someday.
