Just got back from my ride from Chandler to Alpine last night. Absolutely gorgeous up there. 70's during the day, 40's at night. 8300 feet elevation. Alpine is in N. Arizona about 6 miles from the Arizona New Mexico border. Left Chandler at about 8 on Friday morning, headed up 87 to Payson then 266 through Showlow/Pinetop, then to Heber, Springerville and finally Alpine. Stopped for breakfast in Payson. Got there about 4:30 in the afternoon. If you look at the pics, you'll see the devestation caused by the forest fires up there in the past few years. The Heber/Overguard fire was the worst in Arizona History. A little disappointed though as I didn't see any Elk, though I could hear them just up in the woods. Apparently there's very large herds up there and it's a favorite place for hunters. As a matter of fact, the trip was for a memorial for a member of the X-Riders (VTX) who was killed by an Elk after they spooked and ran accross the roadway. Satuday we took a little ride to Hannigans Meadow but unfortunately we were unable to find the scenic lookout there but it was still gorgeous just the same. Left Sunday to go home around 11, Got caught in a freezing rain storm for about 10 minutes between Heber and Payson. 1 minute, 70's next minute 40's and raining..... Stopped in Payson to eat then headed home. Really sucks going from 70 degree weather to 107..sucks the life right outta you. Got home around 7, drank a beer and zonked lol...
