Wow, thanks lads! Appreciate all the advice. At the moment, I'm in South Carolina, and will be here at least until June. I'm trying to look up info on their webpage (msf) but it won't load for me, for the last 20 min!

What type of gear is required for the MSF course? I see jeans are ok, but many have a rider-type jacket already. Will I need to get a rider jacket, and rider gloves, and even rider boots beforehand?

For the MSF course I took in OHIO
You are required to wear a helmet, gloves, riding jacket and boots. They had helmets available if you did not have one.

Your course instructor should notify you of what is required when you register or you should be able to tell from there info when you look them up on the website

Does anyone know if SC is one of the states that accepts MSF's cert in place of the actual test?

According to the MSF site here SC does accept the Rider education waiver. Their site also indicates there are about 12 RiderCousre locations.

It also mentions that SC uses a modified version of the Alternate MOST test which stands for Motorcycle Operator skills Test. It should be something like this.

Thanks everyone! You were all helpful when I couldn't get the blasted site to load. I still wasn't able to look at all the site locations via MSF site, whether I clicked on it directly or used the hyperlinks ya'll supplied. Still working on that...

What I've found out: SC does allow the course to be in lieu of the driving test; I have to get a permit first before doing the MSF class (so need to reread the book again); the SC classes supply the bikes, and (I think?) the helmets. I have to come with other gear. Oh, and it's not state-funded, which means it'll be 200 dollars out of pocket for it.

Thanks again!

Best $200 I ever spent.

Call your local dealer to fill in the blanks for you. They will at least have the contact information for the classes close to you.

Trust me.. you don't need to re-read the book again. When i took my test (it was in massachusetts though, not sure how much it will vary) the questions were like this...

"When driving a motorcycle, the driver should wear:

(a) No Helmet
(b) Half a helmet (i dont even know what this would be like)
(c) Just make sure you have poofy hair
(d) A Massachusetts approved DOT helmet"

or

"When riding a motorcycle, a driver should wear:

(a) nothing
(b) just pants
(c) Shoes, gym shorts, and a wife beater
(d) Boots that cover your ankles, reinforced pants, protective Jacket, Gloves, a Massachusetts DOT approved helmet."

the rest was all common sense.. even those were common sense.. it's just funny how poorly the questions were written.

Some cases I would vote for A

Won't hurt.. it may be a time vampire though...(that is from someone's movie post on here about sony's new useless piece of.. look for that video on here if you haven't seen it yet.. HILARIOUS)..

but yeah you might not gain anything from it either. I never read the book, for car or motorcycle test, and I got 100's on both the permit exams, they're all jokes.

Depends on the state. In TN on the car test the DUI questions could flunk you, and TN loves trick questions as well.

In your state the test was a joke, but SC could be different.

Anyway the book should not be studied just for the test.

I will try to look for that video

The BRC written test was easy, I got 100%. The state test for the temps was rather difficult thought, I got a few questions wrong. One question was passing when in a group formation. Based on the graphic I didn't go with the standard answer thinking it was a trick question. Well I got it wrong. My fault though, they said don't look at the graphics unless told to do so. Then why the hell put the picture there if we're not supposed to look at it. What a bunch of morons.

I'd definitely go over the book though.

Yep, study the book. When I got my license here in MN, orig. license from CA, there was a big difference. CA seemed easy in comparison.

I'm from Ohio, so when I had to retake my driving exam (because I let my license expire), they had all these questions on there about how many feet would it take for a car to stop going at x miles an hour. In my head, I'm going: well I'm driving, and I've got awesome brakes, soooo... not very many feet!! It wasn't in the choices, lol.

Based on the SC DMV website, I think the car book is the same as the motorcycle book, even though there's only one chapter over bikes. I downloaded it just to look over it. It's been awhile, and my interpretations of the law are certainly not what's allowed anyhow lol
