A 72-year-old man was ticketed Thursday night for failure to yield while turning left at an intersection after his Dodge van collided with a motorcycle, sending two people to a Rockford hospital.

Brian Hetland, 28, and a 20-year-old female passenger, both of Rockford, were taken to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center after their motorcycle collided with the van at the intersection of Perryville Road and Riverside Boulevard.

Police say Ralph M. Snyder drove his van into the path of two motorcycles as he attempted to turn left across oncoming traffic at 6:36 p.m.

One of the motorcycles was able to avoid hitting the van.

The 20-year-old woman, whose name was not released, suffered life-threatening injuries and is in critical condition at OSF.

Hetland was treated for serious but nonlife-threatening injuries.

The 20 year old female is a very good friend of my sister. Her name is Paige. Please say a prayer for her!!!!!

Someone make me smile please!!!!!!! I need to stop crying!!!!!
She is just a kid!!!!!!!! This is so wrong!!!!!!! Her brain is swelling, they have to go in and remove half of her skull that is cracked and they claim that they have to put the broken part of her skull into her stomach area and wait two to three months to see if the skull will heal itself.(i don't understand any of that) They took her in for emergency surgery for this. The doctors said she could have a stroke if they don't get the swelling down. The motorcycle hit the rear end of the vehicle. If the vehicle would not have stopped this would not have happened. Unfortunately, the vehicle slammed on his brakes and they hit the tail of the vehicle. Brain(the motorcycle driver) hit his face on the vehicle and Paige(the passenger on the bike) flew off of the bike. No helmets were worn. The driver of the van blew a red light and turned left right in front of them and another bike. The other bike made it. That road that they were on is 45mph but no one ever does it. It is always busy on that road and it is a very open road. Almost everyone does 55-65 mph. on that road. Thanks for the prayers guys!!!!

She woke up this morning and was happy to see her family and friends. But freaked out when she tried to talk(because she has a tube down her throat) So they had to sedate her again. Thanks for the prayers everyone.

Best of luck to Paige. There's no helmet law here either. I still wear one.
