| Hello all, I happened across this forum by accident. I read a few of the threads. Was impress with the sense of community. I haven't been riding long. As a matter of fact, I just finished my MSF course back in July of 06. Past it with flying colors.. (Really what are "Flying Colors"? I used it because it sounded good). I am hoping to purchase my first bike at the end of this month or the beginning of April. A friend of mine talked me into getting a cruiser. I was looking at the Honda VTX1300R. I went an throw a leg on a few bikes this past January and continued until now. The reason I picked the VTX1300R was because of the size. It is good and heavy. Didn't like the feel of the other smaller bikes. The 250cc bike I rode in the class felt too light. I was slamming it around (never dropped or lost total control of the bike, it did buck me around at first, but then I found control). My instructor said to me that you should ride what you feel most comfortable with. I am not that tall of a man. I am rather short in my opinion. Anyway, I originally wanted a sportbike (also a honda). It was going to be 600cc bike. I understand the engine sizes and types. I guess my question is "Does engine size matter?" I hear a lot of different opinions. So I want reasons behind the answers. I respect the Motorcycle regardless of the size. It is just that I need to feel the weight up under me. The 250 was just way too light. Opinions, thoughts, please. for the long intro...

| Welcome, I was down to a choice of the vtx1300 and the C90T which is a 1500. Chose the C90 because I liked it a leetle better and it's fuel injected. Not sure if the newer ones are. My buddy has the vtx and he loves his

| First of all, ,I started with a Honda 600VLX. It was a great bike to start on as a cruiser, but didn't seem to have enough gears for a highway commute at 70+. I bought a Suzuki C50C (800) two months after buying the Honda. Don't bite off more than you can chew as far as engine size and weight at first. And don't be too eager to buy new, as I was, because you will be angry when and if you drop it (don't ask) I'm happy with the weight, size, and height of the C50, but you may be taller, heavier, or more experienced. Lots of decisions to make as far as belt driven, chain driven, fuel injection, etc. Take you time and have fun!! |

| Welcome to the group. I'm keeping a friends '04 VTX1300S while he's out of town, it's a great bike. I would start with something smaller and cheaper in the 600-800cc range. But that's just me, you gotta do what's right for you. Good luck!

| I just want to say thanks to all for welcoming me, as well as, thanks for all the advice. I am going to rethink everything and definetely consider getting a smaller size bike. Biff. |

![]() To your other question, there are two schools of thought. One says "there is no alternative for displacement, other than more displacement". The other says "engine size doesn't matter, as long as you are having fun." Well, with my 1400ccm, it's hard for me to argue the latter, but I do believe it. I enjoy the ride, and that's the important part. The 1400ccm engine just allows me to be "lazy" - I don't have to shift gears entering and exiting every curve because I've got enough torque to pull through in a single gear.

| Sorry, just got the profile straighten out. Still haven't decided on the bike. I reeaally, really, like that 1300R. But, I have to be realistic. I may just go find a smaller used bike first. Re-adjust to riding and then get the bigger bike later. I just don't know right now. I just have to say that I really like this forum. Lot of friendly people here. Biff |
