Default Hello, first time post for a first time rider

Well, I wanted to say hello.. I am a first time rider and I just purchased my first bike a Suzuki M50. Because of events beyond my control I have had the bike for about 3 weeks but have not been on it until yesterday. Although I do plan to take the basic riding course before I get my license I felt that I had to at least get on the bike and see how it felt with it running.

My brother-in-law has my bike at his home where he can keep it in a garage until I get my license. Both he and his wife are both long time HD riders so they have been very supportive of my wanting to ride. Well i went to their home and they showed me how to sit on the bike and showed me all the different parts of the bike i needed to know... like the brakes and the kickstand and so on.... well, I got on the bike and started it up and I have to admit I was both exhillerated and also very scared. I have driven many things in my life from cars to big rigs to military vehicles but was definetely a new experience. I practiced letting the clutch out until i started rolling without giving it any gas and at first i was swerving back and forth (private road on private property ....i'm old ..not dumb) but eventually i was able to keep it in a semi straight line.

Even though I don't think i went over 15 or 20 mph I am hooked on the feeling, I have scheduled my basic riding course for next week and hopefully after that I will go get my license. In addition I will probably need to pick up a few handgrips .... I think I left my finger indentions on my handgrips...(just alittle nervous). Well...I just wanted to thank all of the wonderful people on this site. I have read alot on here and I believe that i was alot more prepared for that first ride. This site is really informative and the people all seem very supportive... I really am glad I have chosen to ride. Well, I hope everyone has a great day and I look forward to learning even more from the wonderful people on here.

Sincerely: Andrew

Welcome to the forum. You will find volumes of helpful info and people here. After the safety course you will feel much better about getting on your bike and will be equipped with some good sound basics. Having said that, getting out there on the road where there are other cars, lights, sounds, road conditions is still a whole other thing. Good luck and enjoy!

The beautiful thing is that the thrill stays with you for almost every ride.
Your smile just gets bigger as you get more proficient.

A BIG on signing up for the training course.

Ride safe and HAVE FUN!

Sounds like you're doing all the right things, Andrew. One note: HD riders are not known for their tendency to wear proper protective gear. Make sure you get yourself a real, DOT approved helmet and a jacket, gloves, and boots. It's not really a question of choice but of simple good sense.

Welcome!

The offer stands for anyone: I'll change it for free if you like. I know I prefer something I can pronounce.

It's an acronymn. You can pronounce it. Stands for Non-Commssioned Officer Academy - Primary Leadership Develpment Course. I'd stick with the acronymn myself.

Andrew. Good to have you. Where are you stationed if you still are stationed?

Another bit of advice - although your brother and law and his wife are long term riders, listen to what they teach you at MSF first - you'd be amazed how many riders out there who started riding before MSF existed have no idea about the fundamentals - such as countersteering.

Since it's not usually pronounced, that would be an abbreviation and not an acronym.

Welcome to the forum and enjoy the M50, nice choice for a first ride, it is a very forgiving bike.
