Way back when, researchers actually built square pistons and cylinders and made them out of transparent plexiglass to observe this very phenomenon.

Forever in the blink of an eye Water retention strength is amazing really. I've seen some neat tricks using water retention.

I guess I assumed it was inertia more than anything. The balloon's retraction is super quick.
