My friends here in California think I am crazy because:

1) I am moving to Florida in less than 2 months. " How about the hurricanes?", " the freaking humidity", and "why would anyone want to leave beautiful California?"

2) I am buying a motorcycle. "You'r going to kill yourself", "motorcycles are so dangerous".

I figure hey you only live once and you might as well have a good time while doing it. And besides, I already know I am crazy and moving to Florida and buying a motorcycle are the least of the symptoms.

Hey Here is a clue for your friends. You can see the HURRICANES coming. You can run.
I do remember that Cali (which i really love that place) had earthquakes...wild fires..on flash floods..all these come without warnings.
Even in the mid-west the tornadoes scare me more that a hurricane.
Driving a bike in florida is tens times safer than cali. Just my opinion.
BTW yeah the humidity SUCKS!!! Your going to have to adapt.

How about beautiful Switzerland? Hurricanes are extremely rare, tornados are extremely rare, major earthquakes are extremely rare, some of the best twisties in the world, very low crime rate, ...

But then again, the best mountain passes are closed from mid November through late May, and the riding season is only about 7 months long (from mid March through mid November). And they all talk funny, too...

I crashed enough to know that you should at least wear boots, gloves, jacket, long pants and helmet.

I haven't crashed, and my goal is never to do so (hence my voting for never going to crash). However if the time comes either through my or someone elses stuff up, i am going to be as prepared as possible for the event. hence helmet (compulsory), decent jacket, gloves and shoes. I admittedly wear demin/dress pants when riding to work, but on those days i severely tone down my riding style to minimise everything. When i go out scratching or being a weekend warrior i wear armoured pants as well.

Male, 38, helmet-gloves-boots-denim jacket-jeans. 1 crash at low speed, hit gravel on a NJ road way after leaving a dinner with friends. No major damage to me, bike to a good bang up. Don't know if I am ready to do it again, a lot more cautious now and road hazzards. Took a week to recover.

I have hit 7 deer since 1992.
I've hit all the small farm animals, medium size dogs, red fox, raccoons, skunk, porkypine, birds, turkeys, etc.
I got rearended by an SUV last year.
I hit the side of a car in '88.
Crashin' sucks !

Oh Jeez, that looks painful!

Maybe the good lord is trying to tell you something? I mean 7 deer and a whole slew of other animals...it's either that or this is some new way of hunting.

Ran into the back of a city bus when I was younger. The bus won.

I crashed back in the '70s when riding offroad, but never really while on the road. I have noticed a terrible change in people's level of attention (cellphones, etc) and willingness to tailgate at higher speeds to get wherever they want to be, etc. Just seems less safe than the old days, even tho it seems it should be the opposite. Are we DE-volving as a society/species?

40yo. 50mph crash; side swiped by a car. Was wearing all the gear I owned at the time. Full face, jacket, gloves. Blue Jeans, work boots.

I learned somethings in that crash, and I believe I won't crash like that again, but I also believe I'd be a little foolish to think I'll never crash again. I do try to minimize the chance of it when I'm out there, and I dress for it. I hope if I have to do it again, I get to do a low speed parking lot crash.

Oops. I meant to click the edit button...

Anyway, 4 months to recover, and somethings won't be the same ever.

The thought of quitting riding never even came to mind.

Doug, we are a different breed, we cyclists...
A person can ride in a cage, with all the creature comforts, and have such a lack of touch with reality going, that you can drink coffee, talk on the phone, etc...
and yet we will put our necks on the line, and continue to put ourselves at their mercy, and deal with the weather! We dont even consider quitting, do we?
;o)

You're right. One look at this thread proves that.

After my crash several people, (who don't ride) asked me if I was done, and the question just surprised me. Then of course, my reply surprised the hell out of them.

No body that has an accident in a cager ever considers quiting driving, do they?? Yet they dont understand why bikers continue?? huh!
ah, the feel of nature, the exhiliration of tooling down a beautiful scenic road, and not being isolated, but rather part of it!
Its sorta like camping out when there is a perfect little motel just down the road!

35, wear almost all the gear (need some armoured pants) and i haven't gone down yet.
key word is yet since i've been riding for exactly a month.

I do know that when i crash, it'll be all my fault.
ie: i didn't see something i should have to avoid it, or i did something stupid to lose control

when i do crash (which i hope is never) i will get back on the horse, unless i'm missing limbs...

Crashed once already. Hit some gravel in a turn and down we went! I'm sure it's not the last time so I have even more gear than before

Default Used race a bit

So between competing and being young and bullet proof (years ago) I have dismounted unexpectedly a number of times. If you haven't yet don't believe people who say it doesn't hurt till later, it hurts the minute you touch down. So nowadays I try to keep the shiny bits up.
