I always felt that the "click-clack" of a round being loaded into the chamber was much more "impressive" than the nickel-plating of the barrel. For some reason, that sound seems to get your immediate attention ...

Ha! try two train loads of hormones, PMS on steroids, and a wife in menopause! Some days it feels like I’m riding naked (not necked) through a hail storm. Riding is why I continue to breath. ß---- sound like something from one of my little drama queens!

Definitely agree... haven't crashed yet... and hoping I never will (but definitely prepared for it in my area)... so many riders around here go gearless though... crazy...

Back in 1982 I crashed.....re-ended a truck at 35 mi an hour-(NOT paying attention and not wearing a helmet). Totaled the bike, had a traumatic seijure and severe concussion and a broken wrist.
My parents think I lost my noggin in the accident because a year after that I bought another bike....no accident since, I wear a helmet everywhere because I'm sure there will be another.

I see that you didn't list this as an option:

"Yes, I've crashed and I had no gear on (not even a helmet)"

Oh, but then I guess these folks wouldn't be able to open up this thread, would they?

yep Finally did the pavement bounce. Although previous all wrecks had been mountain bike and bmx(basically silly crap like jumping sets of stairs/cars/etc) Dec 8th 2004 was the dreaded day.
When they say listen to the little voice in your head they say that for a reason. I had alot on my mind and was ignoring the lil voice.
I had been riding the wife's Drifter all day long.
Bright sunny day helmet and t-shirt weather. My little voice said "where is your jacket?" Well I went to see her for lunch..I had two cars just pull right out in front of me...almost brake lockups. My driving around town is very aggressive and very passive observative at the same time.
Each of these cars I saw it coming. It semed as though they saw me too but had the attitude that "ah! He won't mind if I pull out in front of him"
Well I didn't let anyone of them rattle me. After all I have seen worse when I am driving my stang.
So I get back to the neighborhood. I am driving over to see a neighbor and I turn up the street ..give it a littel gas...then start to slow. The rear tire gets loose ...as I hit the rear brake I didn't know the point of braking was compromised by trash juice and a man hole cover(that = slick as oil). So bike starts a quick fish tail and tank slap. The road has a barricade at the end(road construction) So I have no run out. It is either turn it on a circle or lay it down...because the bike went faster when the traction was lost and the concrete was getting closer. Well everything was in slow-mo but it didn't feel like it. THe bike decided the course and I was highsided. Bounced off the pavement good enough to bounce of the edge of the curb and then off a large boulder in the friends front yard. All the while he is watching and thinking " hey Pete is doing some kinda stunt...opps that doesn't look like a stunt."
Let me tell you when i hit the pavement it went black for a second or two. Then I remember laying face down in the grass. construction workers and my friend are freaking out..saying"Oh my God he is dead!" I don't know but I am pretty sure when your dead you can't hear. so I mubble "I am not friggin dead"
Which at that time I just told them to let me shake it off and walk away from me. Results of the crash road rash from my hip bone up into my arm pit.(?) I landed my arm hyper extended and fractured my upper arm bone and spiral cracked the ball at the top of the bone. The helmet saved my forehead as I bounce off the curb. My leg suffered a dead bruise as I bounced off the boulder.
The bike went upside down. $3500 worth of damage. I thought it was totalled. Bike sat back up on its stand after the crash. I was cleaned up and rode it back down the street to my house.
I guess the bike is built like a mack truck...because the damn thing rides better now repaired than it did before.
If I had my jacket on. i would have had a bruised shoulder and leg at the most. Instead I had to recoup for atleast a month1/2 and pain killers were involved. Living everyday with painkillers sucks. I hate being doped up to relieve pain.
Remember there are three types of riders.
1. There are those that have never been down..
2. There are those that have been down.
3. There are those that have been down and are going
down again.
Lessoned learned here: Wear protective gear...and keep your head on straight when your on the two wheeler.

Good job on the helmet , Pete. It's nice to hear cruiser guys in Fla. wearing a lid, cuz you never know. Right, Doug? Do you think the helmet saved your life? And do you always wear a jacket now?

Thanks for sharing.

I'D SAY YES. looking at the helmet. I without a doubt would had a caved in frontal lobe if not for the helmet. And probably a nose like OWEN WILSON.
I don't always wear a jacket but try to atleast wear a longsleeve.
Road rash goes away but the puncture to the melon doesn't

I am still a complete newbie but I know there are risks and I figure as long as I am careful, observant, wear the right gear, and don't do anything particularly stupid I will minimize the chances of anything really serious happening to me. Of course I am getting heat from some of my friends and family over the idea of getting a motorcycle. They think you would have to be crazy to want to ride one here in this crazy traffic in So Cal. My friends here in California think I am crazy because:

1) I am moving to Florida in less than 2 months. " How about the hurricanes?", " the freaking humidity", and "why would anyone want to leave beautiful California?"

2) I am buying a motorcycle. "You'r going to kill yourself", "motorcycles are so dangerous".

I figure hey you only live once and you might as well have a good time while doing it. And besides, I already know I am crazy and moving to Florida and buying a motorcycle are the least of the symptoms.

Default Armor?

I have heard the term "Armor" concerning riding gear, as in jackets and gloves that have it. Is it some sort of kevlar type thing? Can you get the classic leather type motorcycle jackets with it or does it only come in the more modern style?

And I was curious about the leather vest, what is the point of wearing a leather vest, is it just style over function?

Here's the jacket I got. Nice looking black leather I think.
