I have to keep my CPR certification up for the fire department. In addition, I have to take continuing education classes for my EMT-B (which wasn't an option )..

Last time I went through any First Aide training was when I was in the Military...back in <cough>,<cough>....the early 1980's?

Crap...that was a pretty freaking long time ago. I expect it's changed some since then. I should look for a local course.

I have to take it every 2 years also. I will be taking it again on Friday because there are updates.

The problem is, that they teach healthcare professionals the same basic CPR/BLS cirriculum as non-providers. So, they base the lessons learned from non-provider mistakes. For instance, most non-providers do not do compressions correctly, therefore little oxygen is circulated. So theire answer was to increase the ratio to 30/2, 30 compressions to 2 ventilations. For us providers who can do it correctly due to practice, this is actually hindering to the life saving procedure.

Oh well, we do things differently anyway. You will never see us doing CPR with the ratios that are being taught. *shrugs*

While in law enforcement I had to be 1st responder certified, but that was so long ago...that and the last time I did it I heard a distinct snap in the chest. (guy LONG gone..mainly did it for family sake). So don't let me do compressions on you.

I think I had some basic training back in high school or something, and I've retained enough knowledge from that and other things to be able to do what's necessary in an emergency.

There are a lot of things I should do to better my knowledge, but I just don't have the time or the $$$.

Just prior to Retirement from public safety

It's a very good thing to know these things.

I am curious, what has prompted this poller!

I will be taking a certified CPR course again in November - I took the First-Aid course for Motorcyclists last year. A friend of mine (the owner of a Swiss motorcycle forum where I'm active) is a registered nurse and is always promoting first aid and safety courses on that forum. That's what prompted this poll...

Have to take the combat lifesaver course for the Army and then recertify every year.

Get to stick an IV in your favorite people at least once a year....oh, the joy.....ahem...I mean we take it very seriously...really..

It would really spook you if you saw how bad my hand shakes.

Now, hold still, you may feel a little %%%%%, followed by a tearing, burning, itching, excruciatingly painful ripping sensation.

Oops, I missed, let me try again......

hehe, how about that if removed the word %%%%%!

I know what CPR is, but I don't know how to do it. I'm sure I could in case of emergency... As for First-Aid, I can do that.
