hey...dont push it....i was riding for a year wearing a baseball cap....you guys helped talk me into going back to wearing a helmet.

as for why its not a full face...ive tried them on and i get claustrophobic(sp?) and also feel like i cant see peripheral as well (it has a much larger face shield than full face)...and i like the fresh air

I wouldn't want to be stuck in a small space with you either!

+1
and sitting upright requires you to spend more time checking over your shoulder to see, which can contribute to rear end collisions. (thats what I have found by using different helmets)
Also:
The basic decision of a full face versus open face helmet is a matter of personal choice. The debate revolves around the risk of skull base fractures caused by an impact to the chin region of a full face helmet. Reviews of crash risk rates suggest that while the overall risk of facial injury is greatly reduced by a full-faced helmet, the risk of skull base fractures may be increased ([EEVC, 1993] p 49).

Full face since the bike was new, I actually had the helmet long before the bike as it's my 1/4 mile track helmet for me to be able to run leagally under 13.99 and not get kicked off the track. Since it warmed up after I bought the bike I just got an open face helmet w/ a faceshield a couple of days ago to try out and I like it alot...

I just bought a full face on Saturday, I was using a half helmet for a short while but did not enjoy getting my face sandblasted ! Plus the full face is warmer in the morning. I may still use the half helmet for short jaunts around town on a hot day but I am much happier in the full face.

i also read in cycle world -years and years ago that doctors argue about full face vs. open. full face tends to want to break your neck with your jawbone via the chin strap in a frontal impact while with an open face, your nasal cavities can crush, absorbing the forward energy and saving brain and spinal cord.. . .eeewww
i take my chances with the full face, thanx

I know I'm gonna catch some flack from you guys but unless I'm going on the interstate I don't wear one at all. If I do, I have both a 3/4 and a full. I know its dangerous, but so is riding a motorcycle in the first place.

Hello boys and girls. This is Captain Winkie, the one-eyed helmeted warrior with a public service announcement:

ALWAYS WEAR PROTECTION!!!

You can never fully predict the outcome of your actions. Much like venereal disease, if you don't have protection, you'll get screwed.

Thank you. We may now resume normal programming. Have a nice day!

Like I said, I knew I would catch it on here for not wearing my helmet much. I also know no reason I give will change that, but I like the feeling of being free. You can see and hear everything much better. That said, I am getting ready to run up and get my fishing license and I am gonna wear my 3/4 and my leather jacket and boots.

I hope you didn't take my last post as a flame. I tried to approach it from a humorous angle, a pathetic attempt perhaps. The intent, though was to warn about the risks of choosing to ride without a helmet. Heck, I like the feeling of freedom too. On a nice day in the back roads with very little traffic, I'll ride the M50 with the half shell. It gives me the freedom I crave along with some measure of protection. Otherwise, I have a full face on, which is about 98.672% of the time I'm on the M50. Full face helmet wear on the CBR is 100%, no exceptions!

Did you know that 87.36% of all statistics are made up on the spot?

No offense taken EZ. If I wear my full face for a few hours, (HJC CL12) , I get a bad headache from my sunglasses. I recently bought my 3/4, AGV Dragon, and I use the supplied smoke shield, and I love it. The Dragon looks like the helecopter helmet I used in the Army, its even got a rubberized camo finish. Its the one I use most of the time now. Well, when I wear one...

If you are going to ride without a helmet, just make sure you are going fast when you crash. Believe me, it is better for you and your family when you die on the scene than to live as / to care for a brain-damaged vegetable over the next 20 years.

Sometimes you have to do some looking about, but finding a comfortable helmet is a must. As you indicate, ill-fitting helmets are more likely to sit on the shelf while your head goes for a ride. I'm glad to read that you have a helmet that is happier with your head - sell the other one on eBay. Nobody here wants to read a crashed rider thread about you, and there's probably somebody who'd miss you if you were gone.

I had another example yesterday of why I always ride with a full-face and closed visor. During my MC safety course, we were doing some maneuvers on a parking lot where there were a few pebbles and small stones on the ground. I was following an SV 1000 with the rear fender cut, and he was kicking up this debris. Since we were doing mostly slow stuff, I had the visor open ... and after a few minutes, I had a pebble in my mouth. It didn't hurt, but it did suprise me. After that, the visor was closed no matter how slow I was moving...

Typically, I wear 3/4 with shield. I'd prefer no shield (love the wind), but on the highway the helmet wants to take off. Colder days I wear full helmet. I just got a 1/2--haven't used it yet.
