Default Should M-J.com attempt to discourage new riders from overpowered bikes?

As a communications consultant once stated:

Just because it was seen, does not mean it was read.
Just because it was read, does not mean it was understood.
Just because it was understood, does not mean that it was applied.

How many times have we seen the "Yea, but I'm different" postings?

This doesn't mean we should give up trying, but it does mean that we can never have 100% success. Some people are simply destined to become Darwin Award candidates. You can't protect people from their own stupidity.

I think it is part of out identity. I know for a fact that we have swayed the decisions of certain newbies. I can't remeber who, maybe they will speak up.

I cannot say anything. I am different. I bought the LC as my first street bike.

But actually I had rode for years on dirt and enduros. My brother wants a C90T and I have been telling him that is not a good choice that a 650cc cruiser no larger than a 800cc cruiser is a much wiser choice.

That is why he is going to be starting out on a GS650G for his first bike. Low enough to the ground and stable enough for balance as well.

Bigger is not better when it comes to new riders.

I think that M-J.com provides a very good public service. Most of the people asking the above question are genuinely trying to get a handle on what they should or shouldn't get. Most of the ones that I've seen have been appreciative of the advice offered and they've become strong members of the forum (and are still here!).

It's the ones that think that they know everything that get irked and leave.

...my $.02

+1!!!!! Good observation. From what i have seen the majority that do come on here asking if they should buy a 'Busa as a first bike are "Usually",, and I say "usually" either a kid trying to just have something to say so they can get interaction. Or they are a troll.

But then again there are the ones that actually do come on here with legitimate questions and hopefully they get the answers they need,, whether it be what they want to hear or not.

I know when I first joined the forum here and I had already bought the "LC" I had several members put their opinion in that the purchase of the bike was not the best move on my part,, some said at least the one good thing about that bike was the lower center of gravity and it's road manners.

I will have to admit it has scared me at times and it is sometimes real intimidating in the twisties at times also. But I have and always will respect the bike and ride it with a level head. Advice is what people should give when asked and hopefully they will make a sound decision.

Then if they do go and buy the bigger bike hopefully they will be encouraged to ride sensible and with a level head as I was encouraged to do.

I am thankful to be a part of this forum. If it weren't for you guys, I would have bought a liter bike, go really fast, and do wheelies and stoppies and stuff.

First off Yes we need to encourage people to buy a starter bike, take the training course, buy the right gear, and take it easy on the road at all times. However in the right environment; large empty parking lots, abandoned air strip, the track there is nothing wrong with stunting a bike. We get so caught up on the safety aspect that we forget that part of the reason we ride is the risk factor. I could buy a car that would get 40 mpg but it would be a lot less fun. Riding a motorcycle requires more skill and courage then getting in a car. People who push their skills in the right environment are going to be better riders for knowing what not to do on the roads and what they and the bike are capable of.

I voted that they should be informed, but I feel it shouldn't turn into some sort of a sermon. There are good ways and bad ways to get a point across.

You know I was being sarcastic, right?

Nothing wrong with having fun. I'll do that at the proper place and proper time. I'd like to be around to have fun the next day.

I'm starting my new website: www.busas4newbs.com For the small $40 membership fee, I will tell you whatever you want to hear about your foolish bike choice.

Greatest hits such as:
"It's only a 600..."
"Just be smart, the R1 is docile"
"The SV is a girls bike - get the Gixxer 1000 dude!"
"Get a helmet that matches your flip-flops, safety is important."
"Just don't get insurance, it costs too much."

That's why I voted for No Bike is too powerful.

Don't forget to add:

"Your girlfriend's face will still be pretty if she's wearing your helmet after she slides 300 ft at 70+ mph wearing shorts and a tank top."

"Her parents will still think you are marrying material after above incident."

"Wheelies cause absolutely no damage to the bike!"

"180 mph on a public highway is absolutely acceptable as long as you don't get caught."
