As Night Wolf said...You have to remember that not everyone learns the same way or at the same pace

That's a 100% true statement. I know personally I suck at alot of theory, sitting in class, book work. But if you put me in a lab and show me what you're talking about, I can grasp it pretty quickly. Maybe that's why I'm a better tech than an engineer.

I will say I've learned alot from riding with my Dad and Uncle (who after taking the Advanced Rider courses on his Goldwing was asked to teach) but I'll still take the BRC in a few weeks. Why? Partially because upon completion you're awarded your licence but also because I think that they could definately improve my skills in the saddle.

But to answer the poll, I've never heard of these books. Might keep an eye out for them in the future.

Indeed. I have read books about fighter jets, but I don't think I'm a good pilot. The whole thing is to learn a new skill, and then practice that skill. If you learn the skill from another person like your dad, or from a Jerry Paladino video, a David Hough book, or a class - that's all good. Obtain a new skill and practice it so that it becomes part of your riding. That's how you improve. Personally, I am sure I have plenty to improve so I try to pick up new stuff wherever I can. That said, you need to have some confidence in the source of your learning. If you sign up for the tlwisner racing school, you're not going to do yourself any good. An MSF class on the other hand is fairly well proven to deliver useful instruction.

Don't overwhelm yourself and try to become the perfect rider overnight. Useful skills are those that become habit or reflex. I understand the technique of dragging a knee in a corner on a track - but it's not a habit or a reflex, I'm not lucky enough to ride on tracks.

I just got the book and it's a must have. There's a lot in there that I didn't think of yet and I'm a fairly hard thinker. This book should come with all bikes!

Thanks so much for bringing this to my attemtion!

I bought the book because I can't get into the MSF class until July (and since they've already charged the credit card, I'd kinda like to stay alive to see what I've purchased!). It's by far the best $20 associated with the bike I've spent and I will definitely be buying "More....".

Yep, that and the MSF course are the places to start, IMHO.

own it, read it, read it more and heck it's the book i pick up when im sitting around the house on a lazy sunday afternoon wondering what i should do. I may have paid too much at 25 bucks at border's, but still worth it...even if it was more. Riding around here, you need all the help/advice you can get to stay alive.

I too need to pick up the second book...i did read a bit of that in the bookstore though!

I've read it a few times through and practice many things out of it! I loaned it to my neighbor who just bought a bike and one of my Marines who just bought a bike a both are currently taking the MSF Course!

I'd listen to it if I could get it on Audible.

I'd never heard of it till now. I think I'll get a copy, sounds like a great read.

Plus it will come in handy helping the wife feel more comfortable riding. She's getting better, but still has a long way to go.

It's a must read for newbies like me and probably useful for experienced riders too. It's my no.1 bathroom reading book. Sorry was that too much information?

I bought it, every page fell out after it was turned. Took it back to Indigo, they replaced it and the same thing happened to the replacement ! It has been helpfull though but not enjoyable to read because it is falling apart. I have been meaning to get a binder and punch holes in the pages but haven't got around to it yet. But I do recommend reading it.

just take it to a copy place and get them to wire loop or plastic spine bind it, it'll be a heck of a lot more durable than just using a 3-4 hole ring binder.

or do as i did and just use the machines at work, took me AGES to figure out how to do it though .

Default Edge Trap

I voted .."...never heard of it until now”

In post # 23 Trapper gave a URL with some examples from the book and one in particular stood out for me, the “Edge Trap”. Where it says, “An edge trap is any raised pavement edge or groove running parallel to the lane direction.” and how dangerous they can be but say nothing about how to deal with it.

In my own limited experience I have driven over ( along) some minor “edge traps” and have been surprised at the negative effect they had on control.

Does the books tell how to deal with them safely or does it just give a warning, anyone here have words of wisdom to share?
